Anybody got a 99 XLS, with a switch on the dash that reads auto 4 high, 4low? Mine does. It all lights up when starting the truck, but when I engage from 4 high, to 4 low it doesn't engage. I do it per owners manual and had no luck. Help before I have to pay........

Did you just get the Explorer and getting familiar with it? I am not sure on how to answer your question. To activate the 4 low you need to be stopped and have the brake pedal pushed in before you switch to 4 Low..I think you have to be in neutral also..I have a 5 speed manual and I have to be in neutral, with th brake pedal pushed inorder for the 4Low to be activated..!!

you do have to have it in neutral, but it should say that in the owners manual. i was wondering if anyone else has trouble getting it out of 4lo. to get mine out of 4lo i have to drive in reverse for about ten feet and then it comes out of 4lo, but to go into it i just have to have the tranny in neutral

No, i'm completely familiar with my xplorer, had it 4 years. 4 lo has worked before, but not anymore. Its wierd because everything else works fine. I have had it looked at before, at a tranny shop and after 4 days they couldnt figure it out. It obviously isn't the transfer case or it wouldn't work at all, right?

yeah, if it was the transfer case you would not be moving, it may be that you have striped the low gears, if that happened there is a lot of metal in the case and it is going to get F#!&ed soon

Tap the shift motor a couple times with a hammer.

Had a 97 Explorer Sport in the other day with a similar problem. Would kick into 4wd without a reason and then it wouldn't go into 4lo. Found the front sensor on the t-case to be junked. Replaced both sensors just to do so, and it cured the problem

Cool, I'll give the hammertap a shot first. Then the sensors. Thanx for the help. My ride is posted, "thanks to the man," in Splashmans gallery.
