Hello. Before I drop a big chunk o' change on this stuff, I want to make sure I'm on the right track:

I'm planning on having a 4" Skyjacker lift done to my '92 4x4 Explorer. Class II kit with full new rear springs and Skyjacker's nitro shocks. Extended brake lines, Energy Suspension bushings, front sway bar disconnects, removal of rear sway bar.

Budget requires keeping stock wheels (15x7 I think). I'm thinking 33x10.5s or 32x11.5s, with possibility of doing 33x12.5s in the future.

Is 4" enough lift for 33s? The shop advised against 32s on the stock rims, saying they'd wear unevenly. They recommended the 33x10.5. I read that 4" might not be enough for 33s--true or false? Also, I can't decide between BFG AT ko's or MT km's. This rig will be a daily highway driver and hit the trails every other weekend or so. I don't want MTs if they'll wear out faster than a 16 year old's Air Jordans on the highway, and I don't want ATs if they'll leave me spinning on the trail. What would be best for my use? (I won't mind extra MT road noise)

Also, is the stock rear bumper trailer hitch hole solid enough to handle a recovery shackle?

Thanks in advance for the input

Okay, lets see where we start, as for tire size, you would be better off with the six inch lift, with four inch you would be looking at a lot of trimming on thefront fenders, also an eleven fifty tire would be too wide for that wheel for reasons the shop all ready gave you. Depending on what type of off roading you do will determine the type of tire. If you are more trail riding on solid ground maybe the a/t, if mudding is more what you are into the the m/t. The allterrain will give you better wear, but not as aggressive off road. But the six inch lift requires that the rear springs be relocated over the axle, skyjacker no longer offers the six inch rear springs for the explorer. One option on wheels is the rockcrawler wheels, about 39.00's a wheel in the 15x8. I hoped this helped you, and good luck.

This is what you need to do.

If you get the 4", you will be aching for the 6". so just get the 6". You will have to call skyjacker and get the part numbers for the 6" since most places don't advertise the 6" skyjacker. I got mine from www.rockymountainsusp.com ask for Robin if you call.
They should have all the parts in their warehouse, they just don't advertise it because they don't have a way of lifting the rear. You will have to do a SOA in the rear. Dannyboy has an awesome writeup on this. You can buy new spring perches from www.summitracing.com. Get ones for a 3" axle, and get them things welded on on top of the axle. It will give you darn near 6" lift in the @ss. You will then be able to fit 33's under your rig with very minor trimming in the front. Most of the bracketry for the 4" is the same for the 6". I have holes in my drop brackets to facilitate the 4" lift. the only major difference is the coil length.
I go offroading often with the BFG AT ko's and have yet to get stuck.
If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Andy

oh yeah, make sure you get the steering stabilizer too.
It will help a lot

Thanks for the advice. Who makes those wheels, American Racing? Are they those black ones with the red and blue outer ring?

I'm noy sure of brand, I think that there are different versions out there, the ones I was talking about are the rock crawlers, made by extreme steel wheels, they are in the 4wheelparts ad.

I would stick with the 4 inch. Skyjacker makes an unbeatable lift. I would get the extended arms and probably ditch the dual shocks. I am running 33x10.50s and plenty of people told me they would rub, but they don't. I am running stock rims. If you run this size, you gotta run bfg allterrains or mudders because nobody else makes em in this size. My allterrains stomp the mud, rocks, snow or what ever. It is a whole lot more stable than a six inch too. They rubbed on my tupperware, but I took it off and they haven't touched since. Another consideration is the wheight factor. The 10.50 is lighter so there is less stress on the drive line and better milage. I would run All terrains also because any mudder wares quikly. Just my $.02.

I went with the 4" suspenion lift and a body lift. Body lifts are cheap and I haven't had any problems with mine.

I do think you need the little extra height for tire clearance if you run 33'. I run 33's and have a 3" body lift. Its great no rubbing and kept the wheel well molding.

If your not going to 4 wheel, then stay with just the suspenion lift.
