(Maybe should be in "Transmissions", but awful lot of trans. discussion on 2nd & 3rd gen. threads).
Had a '96, 4R55-, now a '04, 5R55S. First thing I noted in the '04, is selector lever choices: "P-R-N-D-3-2-1", more choices than I'm used to (5-speed trans.). '96 of course had "P-R-N-D-2-1", (4-speed trans.). Both have Overdrive top gear.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I suspect ALL the 5R55- series transmissions used in years prior to '04 had the 7-position selector. This would be a dead give-away for 5-speed presence. imp
