5 spd auto/ 4 spd w/OD?

I'm looking for a replacement for my recently deceased (totaled in the rain) '99 XLS. I'm pretty sure I want a 2wd 5.0 for reliability and simplicity, but I would consider other combinations except the SOHC 4.0. I'm a little confused about the difference between a 5 spd auto and a 4 spd auto w/OD. Isn't this the same thing? I know the trannys are different on the 4.0 and the 5.0, but are there other differences? Thanks.

A 5 speed means the fifth speed is OD. On a 4 speed with OD, it means there are three driving gears, and then 4th is OD

If you go with a 5.0, you will get a 4R70W, which is direct in 3rd, and overdriven in 4th for a total of 4 forward gears.
