I have a push button switch for my 4 wheel drive. No lights come on and I am pretty sure it is not engaging. I have no idea where to begin. I have read there is a controller that goes bad. Also that replacing the factory hubs with manuals might be the problem. Ideas?

Separate issue, is 17-19 mpg about normal for a V-6? Do you think taking off the front driveshaft would help? Runs good no misses. I ask because I have a 2014 Nissan Altima with a V-6 that gets much better mileage. I know the truck is 20 years old and new technology, just thought it would get better mileage. Thanks!

Search for threads relating to the shift motor. It's on the back of your transfer case and shifts it into low/hi depending on the button you push. It may need a good cleaning/rebuild and there's a comprehensive thread showing how to do so.

If you mean taking the front driveshaft off of your Explorer don't bother because it's not turning in 2hi...only in 4hi/lo. A Nissan Altima is going to be a good bit lighter than an Explorer so that would be a factor in Altima's favor.

Here's a good thread to start off looking at: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=202166
Then, if you think you want to rebuild your shift motor, check the stickied thread at the top of this section. There's an in depth rebuild thread.
Look for thread info about 1st gen Explorers to get info that corresponds to your year Ranger.

My 93 Ranger gets 17mpg, and I'm very happy with that, although mine is lifted, locked, regeared and running 35" tires.
I think 17-19 is about right for yours. You could tuneup, clean and adjust things to try to get more. but it won't compete with a brand new anything, it's 20 years old.
