4 wheel drive problem

I placed my 1999 ford explorer in 4x4 today, and i noticed the front end made a banging noise when i turned the wheel. it drove fine going in a stright line bit if i try to make a slight turn it bangs and jumps. on road. any thoughts

yes...it should do that....you are not allowing the diff to differentiate.. no turning and driving on pavement in 4x4....bad things happen.
 






Jim is correct. Only put your truck into 4wd High if you are on loose terrain. When you turn your wheel, your front tires move faster than your rear which causes binding when in 4wd high because your truck wants to turn them all at the same speed. Everything is normal, just have to make sure you are on terrain that will allow the front wheels to spin at the appropriate speed.
