4403 OR 4404? + other misc questions

Well I have been thinking I shoud get more famliar with the parts in my Mounty and have been doing some research..... I have a 98 Mounty with a 5.0 AWD and I tink I come to the conclusion that I have the 4403 t/c due to its a 98 and should have the speed sensor on the read diff. Right??

How reliable are these? and can they be swapped with a 4404 easily??

I have about 115k mile on her and plan on keepin her for a while, so I thought I would start looking for spare parts on my own leisure time, not " oh no need 1 right now"

also I have been thinking of looking for a 4406 to do the mod, not sure what I should do. ( I know I would need drive shafts and linkage)

also I think I have the 4r70w correct? will one out of a crown vic bolt up (from behind a 4.6)?

You have a BW4404- a very reliable transfer case.

The 4low of a 4406 is awesome.

You have a 4R70W, a awesome transmission. A crown vic won't work because of the tailshaft is for 2wd, the one in your Explorer is a 4x4 transmission, allowing the AWD or 4x4 case to bolt up.

You can use either AWD case because you don't need the speed sensor of the early model BW4404. You and I have a BW4403, made after the 4404, the change was made during 1997 when the speed sensor was moved to the rear end.

For a spare 4R70W find a 99-01 model, one part is better starting in 1999, over the 98 we have.

You don't have enough miles to worry about yet, the AWD TC and front drive shaft are your weakest links. Work on keeping ahead of the tune up items, belt, idler pulleys, plug wires etc. Use high quality fluids in everything and check on the ball joints. Good luck,

well, I guess we have to conflicting statements 4403 vrs 4404 I guess the only difference is the speed sensor, and if I have a 4403 than I can use either T/C being that the speed sensor is in the diff case. I try to keep up on regular tune ups and stuff. It make me feel beter when I have parts on hand in case somthing where to break. My luck isn't always the greatest, so I try to be prepared.

Also with the 4r70w, you cant just unbolt and swap the tail shafts? must be a different bolt pattern for the x-fer case then??

With the AWD all you need to check is the speed sensor. If yours does not have one(mid 97 change), then you can use any TC from 96-01.

The 4R70W is like 99% of Ford transmissions, the 4WD versions use two major different parts, the output shaft and the tail housing. The output shaft is the very first part installed in the trans, it must come completely apart to change it. Regards,
