I'm installing a used 97 trans into my 98 expl 5.0awd. I'm using the wire harness and dtrs from the old trans but I noticed the pins in the trans connector are different. Is the internal wiring different for 98 and 97? I only have an evtm from 98 so I can't verify.
Thanks for any help
Ray

Thanks--I'm doing the opposite--putting an older trans in newer truck so I need to rewire like you did but will need the wire diagram for 97 trans so I can figure out how to wire old plug to new harness--you wired newer plug to older harness.

I suggest that you upgrade the 97 trans with the 98 parts which are better. You really need the 98+ mechanical diode(frontmost parts), and it wouldn't hurt to buy the new solenoids which are different.

Pull the pans and look at the VB wiring harness, and the connections at the solenoids. I'd reuse that harness and replace the solenoids that are different in the way they connect. Look at the individual connectors on the solenoids. The 98+ VB harness is about $12 new, and those solenoids are around $25 each.

You are really going backwards with the 97 trans, but it's easy to swap those few parts. Good luck,

how did that swap end up working out for you? i am having the same problem, i have a 98 5.0 awd and am trying to use a 97 4r70w. how did you end up fixing the problem?
