I rebuilt my 4R70W a year ago and now is intermittently starting in second gear, there is no slippage on any gear when it feels like starting in first, all the gears feel strong. It's just an occasional thing when starts in second, when it does, I manually shift it to first and it works normal after that. Another thing that I noticed is at low RPM's/45 mph the overdrive shudders, when you accelerate and increase the speed it goes away. Is any body familiar with these symptoms, and can I get some input? :feedback:

Is this on your Crown Vic? The transmission shudder can be instantly cured with a bottle of FORD Friction Modifier. We run it in ALL of our police cruisers per FOMOCO's instructions. I put it in my Interceptor when it shuddered, cured it permanently. It may help the second gear starts to IDK. I'd recommend ONLY the FORD XL-3.

I do KNOW what it's intended use is but I also KNOW what it will do and WHO instructed us to put it in our fleet. When you buy 3000 +/- units a year Ford wouldn't lead you astray, neither will I.

You can also read here for more info.

ncranchero do you think that fluid would be good for any 4r70w, explorer/mounty?

And I assume you can only pick that up at a Ford Dealer?

Yeah, the 4R70W doesn't know what it's in.:biggthump:D

It's torque converter shudder as I understand it.

I put it in mine and could tell the difference in how it shifted the first time it went through the gears. Never had any more shudder. I've had no troubles with my 5R55E but have been considering putting it in there also.

I'd get the Ford stuff. That's all I can verify that works. It in the $7.50 price range.

Thanks, ncranchero for the info. I will try getting that friction modifier from Ford. Appreciate the feed back.

That's part of what the Lubegard additives do. But make sure you get the right version of those, they have one for modifying Mercon into Mercon V, and one for some foreign car etc. I think the red bottle is the basic additive, and it works great in almost any trans. Many parts stores carry it, and all trans parts shops do.

For the original post though, I'd suspect something else is amiss. I'd install a VB kit if it hasn't been already, plus a new EPC and 1/2 shift solenoid too if they aren't new.

Do you know if Lubegard makes it for Ford?

I do not know.

That's why I specified only what I KNOW works.

Me: Get 5 Guys & a Gal Hamburgers.
B-Bay: Does 5 Guys get their beef the same place Bob's-choke-n-puke does?
Me: I do not know
CDW6212R:That's part of what the cows do. But make sure you get the right breed of those, they have one patty for making McInigestables, one for the Big Angusanus and one for the Pot-luck-chili, etc.

I would say valve body cocern for starting in 2nd and possible 1-2 shift accumulator because they are known problem for shifting concerns and ford had tsb.

I might grab a bottle of that and dump it in my X to see if it helps.

Would a Ford dealer carry it? Ive never seen anything like that at AutoZone/Napa/Advance, etc.

This gave me a good morning laugh. :D

NAPA Stores have an equivalent at about $7.00. It is call "Dr. Tranny's Shudder-Fix." I have used it twice on my 2000 Mountaineer with the 4R70W. It lasts about one-year then the symptoms reoccur.
