Got me a head scratcher here.

I have a new 2004 4r70w for a 3.8 Mustang. From what I can tell, it has all the updated parts for a 4r70e except for a Turbine Speed Sensor. Odd ball crossover year.

Missing TSS

I have a Quick 4 controller and it would be a shame to not use it without a TSS. Much better shift logic and self learning strategy with it.
I planned taking the trans apart to install all the Sonnax parts. I guess I could get a new(used, cant find new new) case and just put the guts in. But then I worry about not having nice tight tolerances and losing that new trans smell with a used case.

Could I just drill out a hole and maybe puddle up a bit of weld and tap a hole to install one? Is the sensor pickup spacing tolerance super critical or is close enough close enough to work?

Wadda ya think?

The case tag indicates 2003 but I see the ink markings have it is 04. Must've been left over parts to make a transmission. To answer your question about adding a sensor you cannot without changing the sun gear shell. The shell that uses the sensor is made of a non-magnetic material and yes the spacing is critical on the sensor depth.good luck with your project.

Hey Transman.

Tag say 11/05/04. It has all the updated parts which include the non-mag shell, 24 lug ring gear, updated sensors, just no TSS.

Know where I can get brand new case?

I have no source for new case. Going to be a ford OEM part. Have purchased new cases for vehicles that have damaged cases from accidents. Make sure to check end play clearance on new case.

Nice find, I'd love to find a couple(or three) like that. I don't know what that might need to update to the TSS you want. All I've been told is that the 04 V6 Mustang was the last 4R70W with the SBF bell housing pattern, plus it has all upgrades and the Jerry's Mod built into it.

I've got two 04 Mustang here/JY now to work with. One has 230k+ miles, and the one with a 136k mile oil sticker I'd like to get. I've already got a 98 and 99 Explorer 4R, those with 75k and 29k miles. With some new parts I'm planning to build one for my Lincoln first, then my Explorer.

I'm wondering if the cases are not virtually the same from the 98-04 range, and all I really need is the 04 VB and maybe the accumulator springs. If the rest is basically the same, then I'll use my low mileage 99 case and the guts minus a new direct drum, a new 4R75W planetary, a Sonnax forward drum, and best 04ish VB I can get, for my best SUV. Mixing and matching works, but you must check clearances well, including the end play, as mentioned by transman304.

If your using a controller, a 2005-2008 4.2L F150 4r75e is what you want. Has the Turbine Speed Sensor and bolts to the 5.0.

I did find where I can get a new case, but it was more than I paid for the transmission! And that was cost not sale price!

What was the cost of the new case, and would the 4R70 case even be available?

BTW, this thread made me look on eBay for the heck of it, and I found a reasonable 04 Mustang V6 trans. It was $250 shipped, and came yesterday. It's supposed to have 95k miles, so it will be a nice set of parts for three 4R's I need next/sooner.

The new case was a bit over $1,000. I got less than that in the whole package.

Are you planning on installing the 04 guts into an older case? The electronics where upgraded also in the 04 and up transmissions which need to me matched with a PCM that coincides with that. The 04+ cases(and I dont know for sure) may have been changed for clearances accept to updated parts.

I gather the 4R75's have the input speed sensor in them, the internal ring to trigger that sensor, and the case changes from the upgrade to the intermediate clutches. I can't use that case because those are all 4.6 bell housings(three bolt starter). The 04 V6 Mustang should be the last 4R70W, so the case and internals will work I'm told, with the older PCM's.

I plan to use my best case for my best SUV with the blower. I need my 2nd best trans soon though, for my Lincoln. I'm still hoping to find the time to go get one of the other 04 4R70W's that are here locally, but I have to take it out at the PAP yard.

I'm planning to use a 98 case(75k miles) I have with it's pump, and other next best parts, to build a close ratio trans for my Mark VII. I'll need a planetary and sun shell from an AODE, and another 04 VB etc.
