I understand that there are two different valve bodies for the 4r70w tranny...one for the 96-current and one for the 95 and older. Can anyone clarify this and the differences there are in these two VB's?

I'll offer what I understand and suggest a link that might help you.

The main differences between the 94-97 and the 98 on was a difference in the alignment pin size. FORD made <makes> something that allows you to use a later VB on an earlier tranny. The main thing is that you need to use the solenoids specific to your year. The VB's were backwards compatible, through 99 at least. (I am trying to figure if I can use a 2004 VB on a 98 without marked success).

www.tccoa.com, in their technical articles has a couple good articles that may help. One is Transmissions 101, and the other is "Modifying a VB to Jerry's Specs". Good luck, share what you learn and where I may be incorrect.
