I just picked up a stock 1997 4.0L 4WD, and when I start it I hear a chime and on the R side of the dash there are two warning lights that flash of and on. the one on top is 4WD and the one on the bottom is 4WD low. Can any one tell me what these warning lights represent? The 4WD switch is set on auto. They flash no matter where the switch set. Thank's

They are to let you know there is a problem with the 4WD system and the truck needs to go into the shop for repairs.

drdoom,
Could it be that something like a wire being disconnected? Why I ask is, it started flashing at or around the time I noticed that the inside lights were not working and the windows also quit working. Just shortly before I had drove it everything was working fine. Might it be something went south in the wiring or the ECM?

Fuse blown I think...check panel at front door.

All of those functions are controlled by the GEM computer. Hopefully, it has not failed. Check the fuses and power connections.

Yes sir, any time any thing goes wrong fuses are first on the list. And they are good. My thoughts are on the GEM also. I'll be checking that and get back to you all and let you know how things turned out. Thank you for your help so far. It's very much appreciated.

By the way, is the computer in the kick panel on the passenger side of a 1997 like it is in a 1993 XLT?

I am away from my manuals at home, but I think it is behind the radio in the center. There may be some accessible manuals online.

Those are all on the same fuse. Windows, domes and 4wd.

Look in the owners manual for the fuse panel and the fuse for the "4wd system"see if it's blown.

look for the asecsory relay under the dash above the gas pedal its the biggest relay in there its bad just had this same problem in a 96
