I seem to be having trouble dis-engaging my 4wd(91 explorer sport) after a period of wheeling. I can engage just fine, but cannot disengage the tranfer case. it's a long way home in 4low. Also the lights on my panel no lopnger work. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks

Make sure you are stopped and in neutral when engaging or disengaging 4 low. Also, to disengage the auto-hubs, you need to back up 10-20 ft.
If this doesn't help, check the connection plug down by the tranny or the switch control mounted behind the driver's side rear panel.
Hope this helps...

Thanks for the input. I'm sure it isn't a neutral thing, as I do this regurly. I can also here my hubs disengage when I back up. The transfer case simply won't let go! I will check the switch. Appreciate your feedback.

You may want to try disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes. I know you'll lose all you preset radio stations, but the transfer case may reset itself. Worth a try.

Hi Dctrdan,
Welcome to the site. Dead Link Removed
Have you checked the connections on the 4x4 computer? It is in the back panel where the jack is, just in front of it on the wheel well. I had a simular problem like that on my 95. I reseated to connections and it worked. I see your from Visalia. Do you ever go up to Sequoia to go 4wheeling?

I just had the same problem with my 91 Sport(5spd and auto hubs). We drove about 15 miles today in frozen rain so I decided to put it into 4WD. When we got to where we were going pushing the button again would not disengage 4WD AND the LO RANGE button started flashing as well. I finally managed to get it out by backing up but does anyone have any further comments about a possible cause?

Barry
