4WD HELP Auto But NO Low

Ok i know there are many posts about this. I have a 1996 Explorer 4.0 Sport, when i put it into 4wd Auto in seems to work ok when i goto put it into low it blinks 3 times and then wont go back into auto unless i restart the truck I ordered a new shift motor today i just wanted to confirm that this is most likely the problem

Are you in 4 auto with the foot on the brake and in neutral when shifting into 4low? If not try that..

Ok so i was messing around in 4wd Auto and put in down to low i Put it into Neutral and held the brake the light never came on after a min so i put it into drive and it made a grinding noise and then in went into low
