4wd help

i just replaced the driver side spindle..had vac line break off....it has the dial on dash(2wd-4h-4l) now it wont lock in? i take it out of 4wd and get loud hum from tire area??? ideas? could the electric part in hub go bad??

If you have 4x4 you don't have spindles. What exactly did you replace?

The ABS sensor in the hub can go bad which may cause issues with the 4x4 system.

I don't remember a vacuum line being in that area.

Please do not post the same thing in multiple forums......

On a '99, there is nothing mechanical or electrical in the front of the truck that is switched when the truck is put in 4WD. The only thing that is actuated is the transfer case itself.

I'd bet on the "vacuum line" being the ABS sensor cable (black line that goes to the rear of the wheel).


Does this occur with the truck rolling, sitting still, etc?

i get the noise when moving?....the line metal lin that broke was a vac line i replaced the whole thing where the ball joint hooks up and where that line was broke....

Can you post a pix of the vacuum line? I honestly don't remember there being any vacuum lines in the area, and I've done balljoints, control arms and axleshafts on quite a few Gen 2 explorers.

Hmm..is it a metal on metal sound? If so, it could be the brake dust shield hitting the rotor. If you bent it while doing the install, it could be rubbing.

the line that broke had sucktion when i turned the dial...i supp. it is used when putting in 4wd?? the hum when putting in 4wd and moving is not a metalic sound...the best way to describe it is when you hear big mudder tires go down the road.....i took out the center hub...that lock the 4wd in and out off and the noise goes away??...ideas

Is the truck you're talking about a '99? The reason I ask is it sounds like you're talking about a 1st generation hub going bad, not a 2nd gen.

are you talking about the lock out that get pulse to go from 4wd to 2wd??? that very well could be it.....it has the the clips that locks on hub

If it's a '99 (what you have under your name), the hubs do not lock in and out of 4wd. They are bolted directly to the front axleshafts, so nothing locks in or out on the axle. All the switching is done in the transfer case.
