I have been reading and reading all the forums about the typical four wheel drive issues on explorers. I have just recently purchased 97 explorer sport with a 4.0L SOHC. The four wheel drive lights flash as soon as i turn the truck on. I replaced the speed sensor in the rear and checked the connection on the trans case motor and it all seemed good. Is there any definitive problem on this or am i looking at spending over 500 on replacing the motor and TCU, both of which i have been told by the dealership could be bad. If someone here knew for a fact it was one or the other i would just fix what was wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated as i am getting married on saturday and hope to take it on the honeymoon so as to get through the 8-10 more inches of snow they are calling for. Thank you in advance and i want to let you all know that this website has been very informative and is the main reason why i bought the explorer

a ford department manager once told me if your 4by4 light is flashing that there is a problem within the 4 wheel drive mechanism.this is really the only time that lite will come on .

you could try taking the hot battery terminal off for about 20 mins and then put it back on and start the truck .
this resets the computer and the trouble codes.if the lite comes back after that you got a problem.

i think ford will charge about 70-80 bucks just to put it on thier machine to test it .this would be a special machine used to read the 4wheel drive mechanism ,not the same machine they use to read your codes.

have you tried the 4 wheel drive?run it thru its courses while sitting still idling and see if all modes engage.it could be stuck making the lite come on .

hope i was of some help.good luck

Without knowing specifically what code is being stored, there is no way to know for sure what the problem is. Any good mechanic (especially one that specializes in Fords) will have a scanner capable of reading those codes, and should have access to a troubleshooting manual. The only place I can guarantee they will have access to all the necessary tools and information is a Ford dealer, though finding a technician that can accurately troubleshoot and diagnose the problem without billing countless hours for it may be tougher to find...
