I was having problems with my shift motor, so I removed it. I found that the motor itself was corroded and so I cleaned it up and checked it with my battery, and the motor itself works.
I suspect that I damaged the small blue location module by prying it apart. At this point, I'm so fed up that I'm not opposed to getting a new motor, but I'd like to hear some more thoughts on this.
To compound the problem, my rear axle, which has a lock-right locker in it, failed yesterday. I suspect that the lock-right is simply worn out--the driveshaft spins but it won't transfer power. The problem now is that without 4wd, I can't even get it home so that I can diagnose what is wrong with the rear axle. I removed the shift motor and manually shifted the transfer case into 4wd on the side of the road, but without the input from the transfer case shift motor position sensor, the computer will not engage the front vacuum hubs so both driveshafts spin and it goes nowhere.
I am wondering if anyone has a pinout for the transfer case position sensor so that I can check it with a continuity tester. Another guy gave me (for the cost of shipping) a used shift motor from a '93, but it uses a different type of position sensor, much like the article on this website about shift motors, and a different plug. If anyone has both '93 and '00 wiring diagrams so that I can splice this motor in and potentially get it to work, I'd appreciate it.
I went over to where my truck is currently parked to try to mess with it tonight (the wind chill right now is 9 degrees). My friend and I were messing with it, but it doesn't seem to click the relay for 4wd anymore. The original symptom was click, wait, then more clicks, and then it threw the error code. Now it doesn't even seem to be doing that. I am hoping that the module which actuates the shift motor is refusing to do anything because it is missing the proper input from the position sensor. It still does, however, flash a code at me after about two minutes (even though, at this point, it doesn't appear to even be trying to click the relay).
I feel like a complete bonehead for screwing up the position sensor when it was the motor that was bad all along, but I suspected the position sensor first because I didn't read all these write-ups before I tackled the project. I did, however, mark it properly before I removed it, so I know it's as close as it's going to get, but it's far from perfect.
So, at this point, I have several options:
Find wiring diagrams for '93 and '00 and splice the older style motor into my wiring plug and hope that the position sensor will work. I have no way of knowing if this will work at this point, but the known-good motor that I do have is from a '93.
The second option is try to diagnose my position sensor. I'm away at college, but a friend of mine has a multimeter that I can borrow and attempt to diagnose this mess. I assume that the best idea would be to check the extremes--the 2H position and the 4H position. I"m going to need a wiring diagram to know which wires to probe, though.
The third option is to just buy a new motor. I don't have a job, so I am trying to avoid this at all costs, and because I can't even seem to get the relay to click anymore (and I checked the fuse, it's good) I'm not sure that a new motor will solve my problem anymore. I'm not sure WHY the relay isn't clicking, but I suspect that a parameter isn't being met to get the computer to try to move the shift motor (that's what I'm hoping for).
I'm sorry for this long winded post, but it's 3 am, I have four final exams next week, and after a long semester, I was looking forward to going home. The 4wd issue was secondary and I was going to fix it later, but now that my rear axle has failed, I'd really like to get the 4wd fixed so that I can move my truck the three miles that it'd take to get it to where I live, so that I can tackle my rear axle problems in the 9 degree weather, which I should be able to fix without a doubt, although it's certainly not ideal to be working outside in this weather.
I hope one of the gurus here can clue me into WTF is going on, because I'm completely out of patience.
