I'm interested in trading in my 4x2 Explorer Sport for a 4x4 version. I'm sick and tired of being 2 wheel drive. It's killing me! I don't want to change the car, I love my model because it's powerful and it handles like a monster, and lastly it looks amazingly good with an inch and a half of lift in my opinion. But I want 4 wheel drive!!! AHHHH
So I was wondering what the intricasies of a trade in like this would be... like:
a. Whats the value difference between a 4x2 and a 4x4 with the same number of miles? A big difference?
b. Would this be a rare trade in reason? Personally I've never heard of anyone trading in a 4x2 for a 4x4, being them the exact model, etc.

I'm just wondering everyone's opinions on this before I persue it.

what year you have?how many miles? PICTURES.

I would look at whether or not you actually need 4x4 -- cauz most dont. I mean unless GA gets tons of snow or heavy rainfall and you live in some huge farm with a 1/2 mile dirt road that gets washed away often, then I would stick with the 4x2. If it were my daily driver, I personally would opt for a 4x2. If 4x4 is not needed but your vehicle has it, it typically just wastes more gas and the added components of the 4x4 just means there are more parts to replace later on down the road.

I dont care about that. I want 4x4.
It's a '01 sport. Inside is in perfect condition. Outside has a good size dent that I plan to fix before trading it. Either then that outside is pretty good. 91k miles on it.

You might consider keeping your 4x2 and adding a locker, which may be better than 4x4 in some situations.

if you don`t have a limited slip at the rear aussie is the way to go.

if you have a limited slip then you need to get the powertrax.

are you planning to wheel?

Yes I already have and 2wd has screwed me over on several occasions off-roading. It performs decently but it can never go anywhere beyond a certain point. I want to go beyond that point and the only way to is with 4 wheel drive. A locker would help but only so much.
Does anyone know if 01 sport has LSD?

..if 01 sport has LSD?
Whether or not a vehicle came with Limited Slip is not dependant on the year in the 2nd generations. You have to look at the door sticker under the "Axle Code" box, if it has a "D" (like "D42"), then you have a Limited Slip. And as for the Aussie Locker, I just put one in my Dana 44 front and have yet to test it out, but its super easy to install (after the axle shafts have been pulled) and I've read great things about it on PBB (duh - thats why i bought it). But again, I have yet to test it out.

check the side of the driver door.

is a code over there like d4(3.73 with limited slip)

Its probably an open differential then. The other sure way is of course to pull the differential cover and look at the carrier, and look for the clutch stack behind the side spider-gears.

IF you really want a 4 x 4........IMHO........Go for it.

Me (if it was bugging me that much).....I would trade in the old 2WD for a 4 x 4. But, since I don't have the money to keep them both. Insurance costs and taxes. But, if you got the $$$.....then why not.

One can be the DD and the other the weekend warrior.

Aloha, Mark

PS.......

Axle codes on the inside door panel:

41 - 3.27 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
45 - 3.55 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
46 - 3.73 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
42 - 4.10 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D1 - 3.27 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D4 - 3.73 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D2 - 4.10 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)

no its one or the other, I have no money either. Thats why I was wondering about the difference of price between the two. Like if I traded it in how much would I be expected to fill in with.

Prices are regional......and so is the rust (if you know what I mean).

Around here, 4 x 4 SUVs and trucks are all over the place........but, in L.A. (California)......they drive those, "girlie cars." ;) It's a JOKE.....lighten up.

Here are some online prices:

Also, for local car sales......you could also check the car magazines at the local grocery stores......around here, a new (free) magazine comes out every week.

patton if you want capable vehicle for offroading then as you said 4x4 is the way to go. if you wheel in a dry pavement a locked 4x2 and some experience it can do the job, but for mudding and climbing 4x4 is the only way.

the way to think about it is easy. most of the weight of your truck is in front. if you have a locked 4x2 is like you push the front and in the mud etc the front is going to dig down.

a 4x4 is much capable in any condition even without a locker.

That's just wrong...lift a front tire and you have one wheel turning, how it that better than two rears working?

i know that a lot of you will disagree with that, but with my experience of using both 2wd locked and 4x4 with factory limited slip is no comparison.

4x4 in low range you can climp and do whatever you want.2wd can go to some extend, but at the end of the day it will not go wherever a 4x4 could go.

thats again my personal opinion and i'm not trying to change anybodies believes.
