4x4 Control Module compatibility

I have a 2002 Explorer 4.6L, Eddie Bauer trim. I have the "4x4 High and 4x4 Low lights flashing" issue where they both flash simultaneously 3 times, then take a break, then flash again. I've already replaced both the transfer case speed sensors with the correct Motorcraft part numbers, last year. The Oracle Google indicated that I need to replace the 4x4 CM. My CM part number is 2C54-7H473-BD. I pulled a CM from a 2003 Explorer 4.6L, Eddie Bauer trim with part number 2C54-7H473-BF. Do the CM part numbers have to match exactly or can I replace the 2C54-7H473-BD with the 2C54-7H473-BF? BTW, I don't have any codes relating to the 4x4 CM issue.

There are basically two or three of these modules as far as I can tell

The Motorola 4x4cm came in three flavors

Control trac awd (like your 02)

Non control trac (rangers, sport tracs, 02-05)

I’ve swapped them out many times with a similar one from
A similar vehicle never checking part
Numbers and as long as it is known good and from a similar year engine and t case combo it should be compatible

And then in 06 they went can bus with the communications and the modules changed. The 06+’can bus boxes will not work with the earlier ESOF systems
