4x4 does not work

FIXED! It was the switches, PO left them unplugged. Must have been doing some service of radio or sumthin' and neglected to plug them back in on reassembly.

Switches are accessed by popping off bezel around radio/heater.

Glad you got it fixed and posted that info. My guess is the PO unhooked it because it didn't work right in the first place - so I doubt if you wasted money on the new controller. There are posts in here by folks with '02s that had 4X4 engaging sporadically. Your's might have been one of those.

Once again this forum will save me money. I had the same problem after disconnecting the battery for a couple of hours just last week. So I will just call for a new module...
But once again I am disapointed. I am a real FORD guy, this is my 7th ford truck. But this '02 Explorer is nothing like the others I had (from rangers to F-350'S). For the last 6 months it's been one thing after another, not what you expect from that class of vehicule. But this is the last time I am complaining about this truck, it is OUT OF HERE as soon as the module is repaired...
Thanks again everybody

My 4x4 issue was fixed today. Rear drive shaft speed sensor on the transfer case. The hall effect sensor was working intermittently. The readings dropped to zero on the rear sensor and it was changed. 4x4 is running nice now.
I drove since July with the 4x4 module unplugged.

Please clarify

I have a 2002 XLT the 4x4 High and 4x4 Low lights on the instrument panel blink while driving, No lights on the push
Button switches. I did disconnect the battery recently, but this started 4 days after. Is this the same symptoms
Of a bad CM module ? I have not scanned it yet ?

Get it scanned, so you don't toss parts at the problem.

now I know this thread is about Explorers... but I have a similar problem with my 2002 Ranger. I have heard that Rangers and Explorers are somewhat similar so would replacing the module on my Ranger solve this problem? Ironically last Winter I didn't have this problem but a few months ago my Battery died and all of the sudden my 4x4 won't engage.

My 2001 Ranger did the same thing

My battery went bad losing power. After I replaced the battery the 4x4CM would not work. I replaced the 4x4CM and all was good again. 4x4 worked.

Awesome... thanks for the info. I am going to Order the part after thanksgiving and replace it as soon as possible! Thanks so much!

Hi folks,

I have the same symptoms as most in this thread......no lights, no clicks, no 4x4. The only difference is that I did not lose power, battery never went dead, just stopped working, I noticed it when I went to put the truck into flat tow mode (gets pulled behind my motorhome)

I DID just replace an O2 sensor and clear the code. That problem is gone, but now have the inop 4x4 problem. Coincidence?

Also, since I have the neutral tow feature turned on, I'm wondering if this needs to be reset "on" by the stealership after changing the module (if it is bad)

Anyone?

Have you recently charged your battery?

Also... watch for the 4x4 lights when you turn on your vehicle. After the Motor starts you should see the "4wd and 4wd low" lights flash. If those lights don't flash... that means the control module is bad. That's how I diagnosed my problem. I literally replaced my module yesterday with the new, updated part and now everything works fine.

I can't speak on the neutral and low issues because those are things I have not used before. Who knows though... the factory installed module is obviously a faulty part and all Rangers built between 01 and 03 should have it fixed (by recall from Ford for no charge in my opinion ) and who knows that other actions could fry the circuit board in the module.

Hope this helps... keep updating your situation.

No, have not had any battery issues, just the replacement of the O2 sensor. I will have a look at the 4x4 lites after starting and see what goes on. Thanks.

Connected to a scanner today, and it had no communication with the 4x4 module. It returned errors as if nothing was connected. Other systems were able to be checked by the scanner.

So I guess I'll have to take a chance and go for the new module. I've been lucky to this point with codes.......EGR sensor, O2 sensor, ABS sensor on my motorhome....hopefully I have a little more luck left and the module will fix the problem.

BTW when I start the engine, I only see a "4wd low" light flash, NO "4wd"

FIXED! Replaced the module and now working again. I got my local Ford parts guy to sell it to me for $250, the cheapest I could find it online was $175, plus shipping so I just went over and picked it up today.

Thanks to all who posted here, helped me out of a jam.

Should have tried directfordparts.com.... I bought mine from them last week, the total including S/H for me was $133.00.

Oh well, Atleast your problem is fixed :)

Well not that it matters now but their website lists the part list / their price as:

1L2Z7E453A $338.38 $180.14

I tried calling but could not get through so I just bought it locally. How did you get that price?

Really? At the Silver State Ford Parts website? (directfordparts.com) .... If thats what it says then they raised the price for that part since last week, I ordered mine 2 days before Thanksgiving and I paid... well here is what they said "Hi Scott. Thanks for contacting us.You need part #1L5Z7E453AC list $222.62 yours $118.51 plus $14.81 shipping and handling in stock" ...

Maybe the mess with the Big 3 that made them raise their prices? :p:

Wait I now see why... different part numbers. Is your vehicle an Explorer or a Ranger?

Ah yes Explorer vs. Ranger..........makes sense now. Good to see that they were consistant in using the bad modules.

I just need Ford to turn on the tow option on mine. I have to get a tranny service done so maybe they'll just do it at that time. Last time they only charged $25 since they had it for something else.
