More than likely it isn't the switch, it is the shift motor. The switch is easy to replace just unplug it and plug in the new one. You can see how to fix the shift motor in the thread in my signature.

That could be the case i bought it from my neighbor where it sat for the last 10 years (it has less then 30,000 miles on it) however if it were the shift motor would that have anything to do with the light on the switch. Because neither of the lights turn on no matter what button you push.

I have not heard of a switch failure before, but it is easy to replace. Remove the screws from the ashtray, pull the radio, and start pulling the dash bezel off from the bottom center. Work your way up past the radio opening and you will soon have the switch in view.

Most likely the motor

I had replaced the switch with used, didn't fix it.
I tried Cculter's motor fix, it didn't work on mine,
but the diagrams were very helpful to replace the motor.
Belated thanks to you, Mr.Culter.
Works fine now.

Most likely the motor, try the rebuild, if that doesnt do it, replace motor. A new switch was more expensive than motor when I looked for one.
