I am having a problem where the 4x4 is engaging while I am making a sharp turn. More pronounced when in reverse. Pulling the fuses for the transfer case fixes the problem, except I have no 4x4 at all now.

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition. There is no 4x4 control module in this vehicle (I just looked). Reading online, it appears that the 4x4 control module was rolled into the PCM.

So, it appears that I need a new PCM?

Do they need to be flashed by the dealer?

Any reason I should not get a junkyard unit from eBay?

It is a common issue. There is a TSB for a dealer reflash, but you can easily disable the 4x4 temporarily (aside from pulling fuses) with a switch that you can install yourself. See this thread:

Will reflashing my PCM fix the problem, meaning I do not have to replace my PCM?
