4x4 help. Probably has been asked before

Just a quick q. And Im sure this has been asked before I looked threw some stickys but am short on time to do to much searching. And its snowing.
The explorer that I have is a 91 with Push button 4wd and manual hubs. the pushbutton was not lighting up and neither was the 4x4 on the dash. I switched out the push button for another, The lights came on when the button was pushed and then went off. Once again there not lighting up. So there is power going to the switch. But is somthing shortening out do you think? what could be causeing this?

Sounds like there could be something shorting out the switch if one was bad, then replaced, then ok for a second, then dead again. I don't know what else to suggest but trace the wires in the dash or out to the transfer case to see if something has rubbed through...
