Good Morning folks!

I have an 04 Explorer, and I tried to use the 4x4 low last night in the snow. When I pressed on the gas pedal, the truck seemed to stall somewhat. Sort of like it was pulling something heavy... Not sure if I am explaining it well. I put it in 4x4 High and it seemed normal. It may be normal, but I am not sure. The 4x4 low works, but it just seemed weird as it was sort of struggling and the gears were taking longer than normal to change. I did have a rebuilt transmission put in about 3 months ago from a certified transmission shop.

Thanks for any help!

4x4 low is for low speed operation only. It de-sensitizes the accelerator pedal, and does indeed drive like you said. How fast are you trying to drive in low? 4x4 high is fine for snow, unless you're trying to drive out of a hole, etc...

Was this first use of LOW since trans. was replaced? If no, was it different before yesterday? imp

What's the gear reduction in 4 LOW? Something like 3 times lower.

Top speed of 4 LOW is something like 25 mph, maybe 35 mph.

It sounds like everything is normal- expect for you using it when you probably didn't need to.

I worry when OP said "and the gears were taking longer than normal to change"

How fast was the truck going?

What Joe said. It should shift through the the gears a lot quicker.

Well, I never used the 4x4 options on my truck before. But I was NOT driving fast at all. I would say maybe 10 mph at most. When I said the gears were taking longer than normal, I meant that when I am driving in the 'Auto' mode, you can here the truck going from 1st to 2nd normally. But when I was in the 4x4 low mode, it just seemed that going from 1st to 2nd was taking longer. Based on the responses, it seems normal, but this is my first 4x4 so I got worried. Thanks.
