When i select 4lo, and then try to select 4hi, sometimes it wont disengage,do you need your foot on the brake & clutch when disengaging from 4lo, when it does disengage there has been a heavy bearing noise from the front axle/tfr case, also when in 4lo and turn past 1/2 lock there is a heavy groaning noise, once a heavy bang ! when turning tight, but the vehicle seems to drive fine, these sounds are unnearving when in the middle of knowhere in the desert! HELP!!!! No thech support here at all !!!!!!!.

Hi Ozo,
Welcome to the site!!! I hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us do.

To switch between 4Hi and 4Lo, you need to have the clutch FULLY depressed before it will shift. I also noticed in my '92 that I sometimes had to wait a second or two after depressing the clutch before I could switch it. On the automatic tranny version, you have to have it in Neutral with your foot on the brake.

Not sure what your heavy bearing noise during disengage is. Mine made a little noise, but it was really hard to hear.

You will hear some noise out of the front end when you are in 4Lo and trying to corner, since the outside wheel wants to turn faster than the inside wheel but can't because of the locked axle. One of the wheels will 'hop' or slide, giving a thump or a groan. It's really bad on pavement or hard dirt. On pavement, the nose of the vehicle may actually hop up and down if you turn sharply.

Hope this helps :)

Make sure you're at a complete stop with the clutch fully depressed when switching to 4 low. What type of terrain are you on when you hear the groaning and banging? 4 wheel drive is only for use on loose terrain where the wheels will be able to slip so nothing binds up in the driveline.

I always put it in neutral for the HI-LO shift.

The banging from turning could be the HUBS trying to engage auto. Mine just did this yesterday, I removed the internals of the hubs untill its time to use the 4x4 again. As I was tearing it down I noticed there was an entire bucket of grease in each hub. I read on this site to use very little grease. Time to get the break guy back involved since he packed the bearing as well.

Ozo, welcome to the site. You'll find plenty of Tech help here! The "thunk/clunk" when engaging/disengaging 4lo is normal. You will hear the other noises when driving as the others have said. You do not have to worry about the hubs, since your year is not equiped with the auto-hubs.
