4x4 Problem with my ranger

I have a 1998 Ford Ranger 4x4 3.0L v6 manual. I took it mudding the other day and realized the 4 wheel drive keeps on slipping into 2 wheel drive. The light on the dash says its in 4low but only the back tires spin. I read on another forum that the problem might be the shift plate. The truck was lifted before I got it and I have no idea where the shift plate is or how to adjust it. Please help
