4x4 Problem

I have a 1999 explorer with 4x4 auto and it is not working. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what would be wrong.

We've got plenty of ideas, but saying it's 'not working' is like saying 'My engine isn't running. What's wrong?'

A more accurate description of the problem (what exactly it's doing/not doing and when it's doing/not doing it for starters) combined with an explanation of what happened when it failed, what you were doing when it failed, what you've checked, and what you've searched for would be helpful.

Yeah, because the 1st gen Explorer's 4wd system is just SO trouble-free....

Ok I went mudden and got stuck started rocking to get it out than the whole front end started shaking then the front wheels stoped spinning. Now when I have in 4x4 auto it is like having two wheel drive. When I put it in high or low the lights come on but the front wheels do not spin.

Ok the other day I had if off the ground rotating the tires and when I had it off the ground and tryed it the wheels were spinning

Before or after it stopped working?

We need to pin down the system to being a problem with the front drivetrain or a problem with the transfer case. Put the vehicle up on stands with all four wheels off the ground. Start it and engage 4high. With the vehicle in park, you should not be able to turn the front driveshaft. It should be locked to the rear. If you can turn it, the transfer case is having problems. If the driveshaft is locked as it should be, we can rule out the t-case and its engagement system and focus our efforts on the front half of the driveline.

Check it out and let us know what you find.

ok I finally got it back and got it off the ground. I jacked it up and had it in park in 4high and spun the front wheel and the front axle turned. So that means that it is in the trany correct? And how would I go able fixing the problem?
