Has anyone had any luck cleaning/detailing the upper intake on the 5.0? Mine is a dull grey and seems to have a permanent coating of brown/black dirt in all the pores in the aluminum that I can't seem to get out. I don't want to polish it, I was just hoping to make it look a little cleaner. Thanks again for any help.

inthe truck or out of the truck?
I just refurbished one for my conversion, but it was removed from the engine.

Gunk foamy engine brite works better then anything else I have used when used properly, spray, let it sit, rinse.
You can use things like Simple Green or Castrol Superclean to get the really nasty stuff, but be warned that stuff is strong and can discolor some of the black plastic parts under your hood.
Also dont breath in the fumes when you spray this crap on a hot engine.

If you want to do a full tune up and refurbish you can remove the upper intake plenum, clean your MAS, TB, IAC and intake alot easier, then wire brush it and paint it grey again or whatever color you want. Nothing looks better then a fresh 5.0L Intake :)
hahaha

Hey no fair you got two boys! Thats awesome :) I have no kids, I was working on that when I had to split up with the potential mother, all my friends are having girls, seriously 5 of them so far not one boy.....

Are they painted? Mine looks like unpolished aluminum. (and even a slightly rough casting.)
Yeah, I love my boys. I'm glad I got rid of the wife when I did. I'm MUCH happier now and my kids seem to be happier now that they only have to see mom as a babysitter and playmate. (she sees them m-f for about 8 hours while I'm at work and basically abandons them the rest of the time.) The best part is if I want to buy a part for the Explorer, I don't have to go beg the 'ol hag first. I got the money... I spend the money... No questions, no justification. Life is good. You, me... and all men are better off single.
