5.25 setup question.

Im going for a loud ass SQ system.

Here is my plan so far:
I have planned to put in 4 KFC-Xr500's. These are 5.25" 2 way speakers, with adjustable angle mounted tweeters.. and here are the power stats.

sensitivity 91 dB
frequency response 40-30,000 Hz
recommended power range 2-40 watts RMS
peak power handling 160 watts
top-mount depth 1-15/16"


They will be powered by a Kicker Impulse IX704, a 4 channel 70x4 @ 4ohms amp. The amp has a built in crossover, but since I wont be running subs off this amp, Im assuming that there wont be any way to use the crossover, so Ill put in baseblockers (do those really work?) on all 4 speakers. The second amp will power a single 10" or 12" Solobaric S7.


All of this will be controlled by a Kenwood HU, the Z828 to be exact.


Okay, now that this is all off my chest, how does this sound? Any changes? any mistakes? any misunderstandings?

Yes bassblockers do work. They are little capacitors that you connect to your speakers and they filter out all of the low frequencies.

Okay here's the deal:

1. That amp is way too much for those speakers. The power handling is only 40 watts RMS, 70 watts will blow those speakers quick. Also Kicker amps are underrated AND Explorer's usually put out between 13.5-14.5 volts. The Kicker is rated at 12v. So expect something more like 95-100 watts per channel. Get speakers with a higher power handling. Something at least 75 watts. Then turn the gains down. Or try a different amp if you are set on those speakers

2. If you are set on getting that Kicker amp you won't need bass blockers. The Kicker has a built in high-pass crossover which is basically a built in bass blocker.

Go for an all Kicker system (except for the HU). Get some Kicker resolution components. They will handle the power that amp puts out.

steve said it. too much power. the peak rating on speakers is useless. the amps high pass crossover is what you will use, bassblockers suck. and bassblockers can only handle up to 50 watts (and only for a few minutes i have found out).

if you want a loud SQ system, why not try the new infinity Kappas. they have great sound quality.

If you turn the hi-pass crossover on and set it to about 100 hertz and set the input sesitivity all the way down you should be fine. The slope of the crossover is 18 db nice and sharp.
