ok, so i left the house this morning and went to pull out onto th eroad, and truck wouldnt shift from 1st to second...as a matter of fact, it wouldnt go into any gears oince i got neutral so i had to coast to the next side street. the past few days, the fedal had been really mushy and now it just wont shift.

had it towed to tranny shop (i have never had to have the ex towed; it was a sad sight). he said its prob the hydraulics.

....so a few hrs later he says it needs a new slave and mater cyl, which meand he has to drop the trans. this is the same shop that did my clucth earlier this yr so he is cutting me slack on it. what i want to know, is why would the both just go out...i could see one but both? he also says that they may have to redo my clutch again (it has 9 months and about 10k on it) but they wont know til they open it.

its at the shop now and i want to be prepared when he calls me back in a few hrs. anyopne got advise? ya'll can call me at 734-637-9542 if it makes life easier to respond.

It's hard to imagine they would both go out at the same time. If it is your slave, then you have to pull the trans and you should redo the clutch if it got soaked in hydraulic fluid. They should have encouraged you to replace the slave when the clutch was done the first time, (general while your in there maintenance). If its the master, it won't be that bad. Maybe they just decided to do both to eliminate future probs.

i thought it was kinda wierd that they didnt warn me when they did the clutch. i hope to god they dont have to do the clutch again....i seriously do not have the $$ for thta and i have class in the morning, plus i already had to miss work today! i have already approved for them to pull thr trans (they are charging me $195 to pull trans and put it back in, plus whetever else.)

ok, so i just left the trans shop.....

$800

new slave, master, clutch kit ( i huess it got ruined by the hyd fluid), resurface flywheel.

i'm so upset. i have dumpeed alot of $$ into this thing, in one year...i think it may be up for sale soon.

They did your clutch but did'nt replace the slave cylinder? That doesnt make much sense, generally when you get a trans job done they'll replace the clutch. pressure plate, pilot and throwout bearing and slave cylinder. I dunno, it sounds like you'rw getting scammed.

i dunno...but my next investment is a $0.99 for sale sign.

I know how you feel. I just spent $400 on parts for mine last week. About $200 the month before and $400 on tires. but hey, I figured I got a lot of new parts that I needed and it sure beats a monthly payment.

Man, they should of definitely replaced that slave cylinder when they did the clutch :( Every shop I talked to around me, when I was getting ready to do my clutch, said replace it reguardless since you have it apart. They also said replacing one (slave) but not the other (Master) is usually asking for problems. They said the failing one will typically damage the other. I don't quite see how that would happen, so I only replaced my slave and clutch.

Maybe thats why he said he would cut you some slack on the repair this time. (because he know's he should of done it right the first time)

Hang in there. It's still better than a car payment. If the clutch is your only issue with the truck, that problem is about to be solved ;)

i tallied it up. since july 2002 when i bough it, i have put 22k on it and spent approx $6600 in mods and repairs, on top of the $4700 i paid for teh truck!...so this thing has me over a barrel for over $11k

How much was repairs, and how much was mods??? A 10 year old vehicle of any kind is probably gonna need repairs...comes with the territory. Besides, why get rid of it when you now have a lot of stuff fixed up?? If you buy a similar aged vehicle, you'll just be starting over again....

Well it looks like your a bit frustrated, i can see that, but what do you think you can get out of it? Seriously, Xs do not sell worth a crap, especially 1st gens. Now that you are all caught up with maitenince and everything, your truck should be good to go. If you buy something else (unless its brand new) you have to go through the same thing again...just my $.02

i think with all the mods, i could get at least 5k. it does have low miles for the year and everything works, and like i said...the mods. with winter coming this is the timwe to sell a SUV. i'll be asking 6k or best.

Good Luck - If the market up there is that good for explorers Ill bring mine up to sell. You are going to have to be patient to ask 6k and expect 5. Im expecting 2500 or less- I parted all of my mods except the lift. The mods dont add any value- I think any modified vehicle is worth less than a stock vehicle- unless its a full resto or something along those lines. Part the mods then sell the vehicle- the vehicle with or without the mods will be worth about the same.

Just my views good luck.

we'll see how it goes...i get alot of compliments on it and most dont realize its age. i also dont want to take time to remove everything.

A) Did you have platinum brake lines installed?
B) What is the body work from? Previous body damage? Or damage caused by you? Did you pay $4700 for a 1st Gen that needed $1K in body work?
C) $180 worth of shocks isn't a repair, that is a mod. $90 worth of shocks is a repair.

All the other stuff on your list are mods. They aren't the truck's fault. So, the comment that "this thing has me over a barrel for $11K" isn't very accurate.

Stick it out man! You are frustated right now, but that will pass. How proud can you really be in an Escort or Cavalier?

You really can't count mods as part of your expense. A truck is going to break down regardless of how much "stuff" you have on it. If you can't afford the maintenance you need to stop modding. That is the reason I'm pretty much stock, I don't want a nice looking truck I can't drive.

for teh body work, u-haul didnt hook a trailer up right, and it came loose while loading a car on. also, i caught my front left tire on a piece of trim and bowed the fender.

i know most of my stuff was mods and i will mod any vehicle i own but i am tired of the stuff that i must have just vbought it at the wrong time to have to replace.

as far as pride in another vehicle, i hav said it before and i will say it again, i am a ricer at heart...i looked at a sentra type R tonite that was sitting in the used lot at the local ford dealer....i will be meeting with him on saturday to ask some questions.

As said before, all the Mods will actually lower the worth of the vehicle, especially with Mods for off roading. It limits the market of people that might be interested in it.

As the others said, counting the price of mods isn't very accurate. It's not "needed", rather something you wanted.

Since you claim to be a "ricer at heart" then it sounds like the X was just a play toy, and perhaps you didn't realize what you were getting into. You can't get around it, 10 year old vehicles are going to require some $$$$ for upkeep. Especially when they are used off-road.

5 grand for a 1st gen, that'll be hard to get, I bought my 97 4x4 sport for 5 grand over a year ago (56K miles on the OD) and now that it's jacked, geared, locked, and sitting on 35s I would only expect to maybe get 3-4 grand for it, if that.
