I resently bought an 2001 4x4 sport and changed all the fluid including the trans to Mobil 1. A couple weeks later I was doing some moderate (not pushing it very hard) four wheeling/mudding. When I went to put it in reverse to get turned around it tried to lunge forward when I gave it a bit of throttle. Thinking this was odd, I put in Drive, it wanted to go forward, back in R tries to go forward, shift to P, tries to go forward, N, 1, 2 same thing. I never actually drove forward in any other gear than Drive as I was afraid of doing further damage. I was able to get it home but it shifted strange, wouldn' go into 4th or 5th overdrive and OD off light flashed unless I cycled the switch. I got it home, checked the cable, fluid level and all fuses were good.

I took it to a transmission shop and they tell me the trany is shot and it gonna be $1800-$2400 to fix it. He said the clutches must be locked up/welded together and it needs a complete overhaul.

I really need some advice on this and did not find any similar cases searching on this forum.

Please Help!!

first off, I'm not an expert......but before I shelled out the big bucks.....

I would drop the pan and check for debris. no pieces or parts in pan, I would rebuild the valve body. there's a valve body rebuild in the sticky area of this forum category.

other than that, I defer to somebody with some expertise in this particular transmission.

What codes came up? Did the shop even bother to scan it to see why the overdrive light was flashing? It might just be something like a DTRS. Do you see your reverse lights turn on when you shift into reverse?

No I don't think they did squat besides drive it around the parking lot and try to sell me a new tranny. This is what I plan to do:
1. Remove and check all electrical connectors for moisture and seal them up with DC-4.
2. Check the codes, reset, drive and check again.
3. Pull the pan and inspect the inside and possibly rebuild the VB as listed on this forum.

I'm thinking the tranny went to limp home mode and there is'nt any internal problems, most likely control problems.

It is possible the clutches locked up but I doubt it.

Thanks for the advice guys I'll keep you informed.

P.S. Does anyone know of a manual good for troubleshooting this tranny?

Get an ASTG manual. There are lots of websites to buy from. I think the one I bought cost about $16. This manual has all the diagnostic info you will need. It also has a step by step guide for rebuilding the transmission. Hopefully you won't need this, but you will have just in case.
