A few weeks ago while backing up it felt like I ran into something, nothing there and no reverse after that. After reading some threads it appears that the reverse band has broken since there is no engine braking in manual first gear either. All forward gears work properly. I know this will need a rebuild.

Any recomendations on where to get it rebuilt ( I will remove it and take the tranny to shop).

Are there any viable alternatives to the stock tranny? I have looked into the M5OD swap and seems there will be too many things to change to make it worthwhile.

I have read several threads about the rebuild and I just don't think I can take the time to try this myself and risk another failure.

Thanks

Does anyone know if a 5R55E from an 04 Ranger would have any problems in my 99 Explorer?

If it has the same sensors on the side of the trans it should work but I think the 04 has a different count, and the main wiring plug is different. If all is the same you are ok.

does anyone have an idea why hollander and mitchell manuals say only the trannies from 98 will fit 98,, has anyone used other trans than 98 in their exp,, my exp 1998 4.0 SOHC,,, what were the problems?? thanks buck

I assume it is an auto, any 98 to 01, 5R55E will work with no problems. 97 has an extra sensor but it will also work.

I don't have any answers either, I was hoping to get a newer tranny that might have some upgraded components already it doesn't look like this will work.

Any 5R55E that fits is the same internally, there is no other model that is and exact replacement that will work.

well,, im drawinm a blank to post new threds si ill put it here since its related,,, first,, i talked to a trans rebuilder, he said i could use a 5r55e but some had 2 sensors at the back and some had onewhat i did not find out was if my 98 4.0 sohc was one or 2 sensors,, but on to another issue,,,i have a chance to buy rolling chassis of ranger 2004 3.0 auto,, im thinking mebbe to put engine trans into my exploder,, has anyone here done it,, what are the issues,,,,,poprichie,, could u call me or i call you,, would like to pick your brains,, thanks buck

I just stumbled upon a thread on therangerstation.com that stated that no reverse and no engine breaking could be cause by a blown valve body gasket. Is this correct? I had read previously that if I had no reverse and no engine braking in manual first then the revers band is broken. Any way to confirm this? If I could put a new valve body in this truck and get it back on the road that would be great.

Drop the pan, pull the valve body and carefully check to see if the gasket was blown out, at the same time with the valve body out and the reverse server removed you can check the reverse, low band. Insert a screw driver in the server pin hole and push up on the end of the reverse band, if it tightens it is ok, other wise it is broken and there may also be a end piece in the pan.

.....i have a chance to buy rolling chassis of ranger 2004 3.0 auto,, im thinking mebbe to put engine trans into my exploder,, has anyone here done it,, what are the issues,,,,,.......
The 2004 Ranger 3.0 has a 5R44E trans, which has
a lower torque rating than the 5R55E. The 3.0 also
has a lower HP and torque rating. The 3.0 enine and
trans might fit in the Explorer, but you would NOT be
satisfied with the results.

Your best bet is to fix or replace the existing 5R55E.

Maybe expand your horizon. I have a post inquiring about a conversion kit for a GM 700R4 transmission to replace an A4LD in a `91 Explorer. Maybe this site, http://www.transmissioncenter.net/AOD.htm , might help. There are plenty of conversion kits available from the mustang to aerostar. The site is somewhat hard to read.

See what other people have done first though.

It can't hurt look into.

I have a spare AOD but I don't think the bell housing is removable, maybe I am mistaken. Anyway the AOD is a power hog and I don't know if I would like the results. I found a local guy that build transmissions for aamco, says he has been doing it for 32 years and is my friends neighbor. He quoted $850-900 including a rebuilt valvebody and new torque converter. Sounds like the best way to go. Should I invest in a shift improvement kit and have him install it while he is at it?

That's a good price, and yes go ahead with the kit also.
