1997 Explorer XLT SOHC
I was out today in a field in my SOHC 1997 Explorer. I was rocking to get out of a rut and was shifting from reverse to drive and slightly neutral jammed it by accident. I heard a big slam and that was it. Now the only thing in the transmission that works are the parking pawls. Wondering first what could be wrong more specifically than its sh** out. Secondly, by my estimation, I will be replacing the 5R55E. How involved is this process? I've removed and replaced the transfer case before in it so that should still be easy to remove and separate. I'm assuming I won' have to pull the engine. Compared to the transfer case, how much more or less work is it? I need a response ASAP. Also, any reputable places to get a used 5R55E? Please answer!

Thanks.

I'm assuming the 4R55E is pretty much the same process as teh 5R55E? Also, read the instructions, and it sounds like a weekend job or a little more. Am I right to assume that? Also, is replacing the torque converter neccessary? Thanks for the quick response by the way.

Does it sound like it could be a broken input shaft?

I'm thinking its that or the hydro pump input shaft.
