my 98 xlt auto ex is now stuck in gear!

it works fine in reverse, gear 1 and gear 2

as soon as you put it in drive it lurches forward as if you've tried to set off in 4th or 5th gear and stall's

i can set off in gear 1 then knock it into gear 2, which it does fine

then once i have some speed up i can put it in to drive and it drives as if in a high gear

if i slow down too much in drive it will stall, like the clutch is not disengageing

i have the option of a second hand trani i can buy of a mate

the ford garage by me cant look at my ex for 2 weeks as the tech guy is on holliday

any help or ideas?

I would check out the electrical connectors on the gear box. Other than that get a fully re-built unit from an auto box specialist with a guarantee.

What you are experiencing sounds like the Torque Convertor is engaging inproperly. Are you are right it is just like something is not disengaging, when the TCC engages at the wrong time it is like letting out the clutch on a manual transmission with it in too high a gear.

It could be other clutches or bands not releasing as they should as well...I'll have to look at a chart and see what is applying when in the gears and what is releasing... that may also provide a clue... but preliminarily, I am thinking TCC.

update

just a quick update on this one

after further investigation at the ford garage, the trani thats on is a recon from ford

it got replaced 22 months ago and has only done 25000 miles

they are going to check to see if the TC got replaced at the same time

if it didnt then it looks like that is the problem and will be the first thing to try

meanwhile i have managed to get hold of a complete box of a right off ex

so im going to swop the lot over and do some investigations

i'll post updates when i know more incase anyone else has the same problem

I don't know about the UK, but in Canada remanufactored Ford transmissions carry a 2 year 40,000 km warranty... and come with a torque convertor.

can any one else confirm this?

does ford give a 2 year warranty on trani's in america?

cos the ford recon boxes come from usa to uk as mine did

this would be a serious complaint to ford uk if it does have 2 year warranty

as ford uk say they only give 1 year

and it could mean i could have a chance of geting one on warranty
