Hello this is my first post due to just starting to change my ‘00 Explorer EB a bit. I been looking around on here for some detailed pictures of trans test port and trans temp sensor to where people have put them. I know this isn’t as accurate temp but still gets a estimate. The location is behind the shift linkage and is a 11m socket. Hopefully this helps!

Hi Brody,
I´m planning to do the same, since an overheating I´ve got last january on hot summer in a mountain range, (+5000 km in Argentina, southern hemisphere). That tough lasting trip I suspect was responsible to broke the 5r55e Reverse band a month ago.

The truck has 193.000 km, so time for a trans full rebuild were coming but I´ve the plan to keep this truck well beyond 400.000 km or more, so to get a Temp sensor directly attached to the trans will help me to avoid same troubles as mentioned.

Can you post some pictures were you wire the temp gauge to the dashboard and the dashboard mounting itself...???

TX in advance

Hello! Yeah I got you covered. I got my gauges mounted on the A pillar of truck. Glowshift is what have and they got the pillar mount with 2 selection of gauges of your choice. I chose coolant and trans temp. But here is some pictures of my gauges for your help! Also the gauges is going to have you put add a circuit for the fuses however I didn’t find any inside the cab so I just taped into my radio harness for 12v constant and ignition and ground. If you need any more help don’t hesitate to ask.

Quite good,
if it counts, the 12 v plug is hot on contact and +10 A fused.
I prefer for sure if gauges in metric units were avail.
Can you share the marketplace link link were you bought them...???

Here’s is the link to the mount. GlowShift | Ford Ranger Gauge Pods
Then from there you can choose the 2 gauges of your choice. I did Trans and Coolant Temp. It will say Ford ranger but those years the ranger and explorer had the same A pillar trim.

It's a pity they only have trans temp gauges in digits format for metric celsius.
Yep, up to 2001 both Ranger and Explorer shared a lot, that's why I can find some local made spare parts here in Argentina since the Ford Ranger were assembled (still are actually) here but with Diesel engines.

Check out the max tow series of the gauges. It made from Glowshift people. I believe they make Celsius in the max tow

Nice. What kind of adapter did you use to bolt in the glow shift sensor? My glow shift sensor is 1/8 npt.

Thanks. I tried the adapter in the pan but it leaks even with crush washers. I’ll go with the test port instead. Did any fluid leak from the port when you removed the bolt?
It was very small amount. More it oozed out. I didn’t know about an option for the pan. When I bought mine 1 year ago. It was just test port options

I originally wanted the sensor in the pan because I bought a Dorman pan with a drain bolt. But the sensor leaked and it was a huge headache. I have the stock pan back on and ordered the extender for the test port. I didn’t know the 5r55e had a test port or I would have gone with that in the first place as it’s the most accurate place to get a temperature reading.

A previous Ford engineer who worked on transmissions states that on post #7 in the below link. I’m not sure if it’s the case on the 5r55e but on other transmissions the test port area is where the transmission pump sends fluid through.

Ok thanks for info! Makes me feel better about the temps. I read the other way around. Where pressure is not as accurate. Thanks for info! For the test port plug you’ll need a deep socket and it needs to be size 11mm. It’s in a sport where it’s hard to see becuase of the torsion bars but with one eye close it’s easier!

The sensor is in place and isn’t leaking. I lost about an ounce of fluid when I removed it but it was a slow leak so not too bad.

I ran the wire up through the grommet just in front of the driver’s seat. This is definitely a simple, low cost mod that can prevent a lot of issues if high transmission temperatures aren’t noticed soon enough.

For the ends
Oem
Its what I use

Read this ....reviews ...
I buy 5 rolls at a time

@Mbrooks420 most likely uses this stuff if not probably should lol

Has anyone ever compared OBD temp with the test port temp? they close?

Not me but I can imagine that Ford chose that location for the test port since it’s the most accurate spot for a test. I have Forscan but I’m not sure if it lets you read transmission temperatures. I’ll have to do a comparison if it does.

Forscan does show trans temp
And a ton of trans pids

Good to know. I need to program a key soon so I’ll look into the transmission readings.
