I'm beginning my quest to make sure I get this done right the first time.
Back round is a 03 Explorer 4.0, 5r55w, 4x4. About 70k miles.
This morning saw a ton of oil spots on the driveway. Checked it out after work and it's ATF, appears to all be coming from the front of the trans. Along with a little bit from the rear, but mostly the front.
I'm thinking it's the front pump seal.
Doing a bit of research on it, it appears it could also be the TQ itself? The Ford service manual shows you how to "diagnose" it, but it doesn't do any good to me since you can't see inside the dang bellhousing anyways.
So, I'm going on the assumption (more like hope) that it is the front pump seal.
I'm going to replace the engine's rear main seal while I'm there, and also any of the rear seals/gaskets that may be contributing to leakage.
Anyone else been here before on these? Any hints/help/tips?
I'll be doing it on my back in my garage using hand tools.. Fortunately the car is pretty much rust/corrosion free underneath and I'm not expecting any hassles there. Not the first time I've dropped an auto trans, just the first time on something this new.
also had to sign up for a new user name.. lost my password to the old on and the email is no longer valid.. so I can't get it.
