1999 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 4.0L SOHC

So, one of my friends owns a complete metal shop right.... He races BMX, quarter midget cars, as well as numerous other things with engines... He owns a 68 AND a 63 Firebird, all engine restored and BUILT by him. He custom fabiricates EVERYTHING. He was looking over my engine one day, and way mumbling things he could do to it, and in the end he told me he could achieve about 600 Horses off of my engine. If I were to buy like a bamachip, would I be able to program that to tell my engine that it isnt an ordinary V6 with these parts? He can make me anything from an intake to a purly custom turbo off of a diesel bus... (hes done it to one of his friends cars no prob). So is there a way to tell my engine "shut up and take the performance given to you?":exp:

you would be able to program the computer for the engine to take advantage of the addon's you've done to the motor, I don't know how obtainable 600hp is without SERIOUS money invested.

You could do that with a chip but your going to have to have a pretty good tuner and a dyno to get it right. If he does get that kind of power out of it your going to have to do a lot more work to the explorer too. A stronger transmission, transfer case, etc.

Actually, the parts are remarkably cheap... believe it or not, this kid gets things donated to him... He builds custom carbon fiber things for BMX bikes(donated by high end companies), and whyle racing those quarter midgets he gets engines, frames, anything, all donated to him, as well as anything else he desires. He has several old, I forget what they are called, not carborators, I dont think, but theres 2 intake slots for daily driving, and in his words, "when you get pissed and stand on the gas, THESE open" and two MASSIVE intake slots that fly open. Instant boost and he can build pretty much anything, I think hes going to start working on a possible bigger throttle body for it... Pretty much anything you can do to a car, he can build out of a block of metal(any kind) and use. Right now, were in the process of building lambo doors for it w/300lb hydrolic arms, FREE!

(his dad designed and built the interior of the BudWiser racing boat)

Where would I go for a good tuner and dyno guy? The people here in Springfield dont really know much about custom cars, only 1 garage to far knows how to compensate for a lowered suspension...

Id love to see some pics of a 63 firebird.....
on another note, where there is a will there is a way but 600HP wow!

Call around to some shops around your area, there's probably at least one specialty place near you.

yea im pretty sure they came out in 66 or 67

they did come out with the "'63 Pontiac 421 Super Duty" kinda looked like a firebird a lil!!!

67 was the first year camaro and firebird :p: thats why i was so interested in what a 63 would look like. I think he meant 73

possible!!!!

You wont make 600hp with your stock engine. The engine will eat itself before those numbers are reached. You are looking at many thousands of dollars to get anywhere close to that. I am not even sure if there is a 4.0 block out there that will handle the power. The tranny wont hold it either. The only way you'll see this much horsepower power is to do a 5.0 swap with a Dart based to similar engine plus some forced induction.

As far as I know, James Henson has the fastest 4.0 Explorer, and he is only putting a little over 300hp to the ground. But, if you could somehow find the parts to make it, James or any SCT tuner could make it run.

I thought there was a dude with a newer explorer closing in on 600, over 400 I beleive. He has EXTENSIVE like I think it would have been cheaper to buy a vette by now new work done to it.

rocket 5979 is at 400 tuned.

MarineSNiper217 >> Removing almost all that stuff in your signature from your Explorer WOULD be a first step in making it "faster" ;) I mean thats gotta be almost 100 lbs right there.

I might be confused but in 99 wasnt the only AWD model ford offered the v8 OHV gas guzzzzzler. In that case 600 is not far fetched but your really gonna want to do a 2wd conversion.

that 5.0 gas guzzzzzzler prolly gets better milage than your OHV.

4.0 do not have AWD period. They have Control Trac. Only 5.0 have AWD

So many people think that Control Trac is AWD which it is not!

Oh by the way I love my 5.0 gas guzzzzzler

The Firebird guys shooting the ****, the only way you are going to reach 600 hp is with a 400hp turbo/supercharger or a 400 shot of nitrous, with those heads, intake, cam, TB, rods, pistons, transmission maybe even engine block theres a 1% chance it happen. That carb thing, its called a 4 barrel, you can buy one for 200$ new, some cars even have 3!!! of them on the same engine!! :D lol
