When we upgraded I put in Pioneer 5x7's (or was it a 6x8??) in the front door. It sounded pretty good. I then upgraded again to a Clarion Pro 5x7 plate. The 5x7 plate has a 5.25" mid and a 1" tweek on a plate. The tweeter can be adjusted to change where it is aiming to. In my opinion 5x7 with 1" tweet sounds much better than the 5x7 speaker.

I replaced my factory JBL speakers with a set of MB Quart 5.25" components. I traced the shape of the old speaker onto a piece of 1/2" plywood, cut it out and added holes for the new speakers. In my opinion this is the better way to go. You will get MUCH better sound with components than you will with a plate speaker or a 5x7.

How is a component going to get better sound than a plate setup? The plate is two components on a single plate.. a 5.25 component and a 1" tweeter? I understand the MBquart quatlity is better than the clarion Pro (I run mbquart in the house) but other than a better speaker in general a plate and a component on plywood is practically the same thing, a speaker on a plate (metal or wood)..

I may be wrong but I believe that the travel of a component midrange is greater than that of a plate speaker. (Just judging from those that I have seen in the stores) You also gain the versatility of positioning the tweeter wherever you want. I personally think that a component set sounds better than a plate but maybe thats because I'm used to my MB Quarts. I'd probably have to hear them in the vehicle to make a decision.

I had a 2 set of the clarion plates in my previous92sport, I thought they sounded great! But I just installed the MB Quart 5.25 components all around in the 92 sport I just bought a month ago. What a superb sound! But I think unless your looking for a high price system the clarion pro audio plates are the way to go! For a 100 bucks a set(on sale at cruchfeild) you can't go wrong! I know I paid over 250 (per set) for my MB Quart componets.
Also in my opinion 93Eddiebauer, if you mounted your tweeters on the same plates as the woofers you have the same basic set up as the as the clarion pro audio plates!
I mounted my tweets above the power lock buttons on the door panels in the front, and in the back they are mounted on the top of the trim panels around the windows, then I angled them till I got the sound I was looking for.

Punkchild, If you go with a sub in the back you will need an amp for that. I think you would be happy with a plate speaker like the clarions, but I would definetly go with a decent4 channel amp to run your speakers, it won't have to be to high powered if you go with the clarions because there only rated for a max of 35 watts RMS with peaks of around a 100 watts. If you don't go with the sub, then I would consider a decent 3way speaker for the fronts and a set of 2 ways in back. I myself would still add a decent 4 channel amp to that set up also.

Thats my opinion,

Thanks for all the info! I think I might go with MB Quarts all around ($130 a set at Metro Audio Dynamics). I'm still trying to buy a used JL stealthbox so I can put in a W-3 10". The JL box is better than the MTX box because it's made of fiberglass not plastic. As for the amp I can get really good deals on Alpine (I know the midwest sales rep.), so I was thinking of getting one of the class-T 5 channel amp, MRD-F752. That way I'll have 4 separate channels for the MB's and one channel for the sub. What do you guys think about that? Also anyone know where I could find a used JL Stealthbox? Thanks.
