6x9's in replace of stock 5x7 in 1st gen ex? possible?

Okay.. so, lets bring this thread back to speaker talk, and lets try to make our replies clear as daylight so we can all participate in the almost orgasmic, some say religious, experience that is 'ExplorerForum'.

I recently installed a pair of 6X8 Pioneers in the back, they have a greater clarity than the stockers. My suggestion is go for clarity of the music rather then loudness. It'll save your ears and you'll enjoy it more. but to answer your question, yes you can easily fit the 6X9 by cutting the sides of the speaker hole with metal cutters. just make sure you file the edges down so you don't cause the speakers to rip.

Good luck and be sure to show the results.

honestly i was trying to help someone out. But if that is the negative feed back; im going to receive then why bother.

Use proper punctuation, or at least a period or two and you won't get made fun of.

Best Regards,
Justin

OMG talk about audio or this thread is going to go towards the deep end of the pool where no one is going to want to swim.

Try www.crutchfield.com I have bought all kinds of stuff from them over the years, and never had a bad experience yet. There is a lot of good information on the site too, so you can educate yourself and make informed decisions, instead of just buying whatever. They're customer service is outstanding, and if you call and talk to a tech support type guy/gal thy are more than happy to answer any questions you have. As far as what brand of speakers/amp/deck to go with, the brand is not nearly as important as whats inside, so to speak. Every brand has a wide range of products. Personally I'm a Pioneer man myself, but If I see a good deal on something else I'll go for it. Anyways, what I am saying, in a round about way, is do research, educate yourself and make an informed decision. Just cause I like Pioneer stuff, and some other guy says buy Sony stuff, and another likes Alpine, etc etc, doesn't mean anything except thats what we like. Find a shop that does audio near you and check stuff out. The people there should be more than willing to talk to you and answer questions. If they aren't, or they don't seem to listen and just try to steer you to something, then i wouldn't shop there. If all else fails go to Best Buy, no one there works on commission, and they are pretty knowledgeable (I used to work there). Wow, this is really long. Sorry, lol. Once I get going.....

You're blowing speakers because the amp is too weak. The weak amp in the HU cannot provide enough power, and goes into clipping or starts distorting and you start getting rough DC pulses to the speakers instead of a nice clean AC audio signal. This blows speakers, too much power makes the coils melt.

Don't waste your time mangling parts of the car to get the bigger speakers in, just get a good set of 5x7's and an amp, all from a name brand like Alpine, Panasonic, or Pioneer. Add a sub if you want, it will save you $ in the long run because even with good equipment running with the bass turned up all they way to try and get more thump from small speakers is just gonna break stuff.

well i have a 1,000 watt amp on 2 12's already, im goin for clarity like one of the other guys said, but also loudness

Your amp is not 1000 watts. It is more realistically 200-300 watts MAYBE. Nothing close to 1000 watts.

x3 I have a 1000 watt amp, and along side the other two that are much less than 1000 watts, there's no distinguishing one from the other. So, I'd agree; 1000 watts is an advertising gimic.... tho I admit, I know little about audio.

Not quite true. You cannot blow a speaker from underpowering it. But, from your explanation, I think you know what I'm going to say.

hey i have been having a problem. when i turn my volume up to 26 my sub stops working and i belive my amp goes into like safe mode and turns off i am running a pretty big gage to it but idk about the ground is small gage

Power and ground should be the same size. It also sounds like a voice coil is rubbing so when it gets loud enough to reach full excursion, it shorts and sends the amp into protect.

what can i do about voice coil? and ill try changing ground also

Did a quick search, brought up this ancient thread. Anyone have pics of front door modifications to fit 6x9's in place of 5x7's? Details etc? Have the doorskins off now and trying to get some ideas. Thanx

I just did this myself. If your trying to put them in all four doors the fronts just need to be angled a little bit and use longer screws. Wound up using 1" and 1-1/2" self tapping pan heads. I went thru the very edge of the speaker mounting rim and drilled little pilot holes as best I could to match the stock mounting holes.

For the back doors, its a little more involved. I recommend a Dremel and a good number of cutting wheels. I only had the regular ones at the time but I'm more than sure the heavy duty one will rip thru real easy and last longer. I'll take pics tomorrow and show what I did, but I'll do my best to describe what I did.
First, cut out the back of the stock mounting area, where are all the round and oblong holes are. This will get you the clearance for the magnet.
Second, the black mounting bracket. Cut several small sections in the INNER LIP. I cut sections around the stock mounting holes so I could use them if needed. Also cut two good sections one on the left and one on the right, and take a pair of pliers of your choice and fold those out for mounting the 6x9. The rest can be folded in to the best of your ability. Drill pilot holes on the left and right of the 6x9 to match your two folded out tabs. Connect and mount your 6x9's and put your panels back on and your done!

Sucks I didn't take pics of the process but I'll snap some tomorrow of the finished product. I still have the back door panels off so I can finish fixing my window cables. Might as well show the front too, just take a few seconds in the name of learning.
