Ok doing a gear change when i get home to 4.56's and i was like hey why not grab a pair of lockers. So after a few weeks of searching figured i'd go with some aussie lockers.

New on this. I got 3.73 L/S in the back 8.8 here is what i think
front dana 35 should also be 3.73, but would it be L/S also or open?

now with the rear being L/S i have to change to an open carrier right? this involve anything extra when changing carrier or is it a one for one swap? and if the front is L/S i need to change that carrier also? anyone recommend use a carrier from a pick and pull or just buy new? ***edit** can i just buy an empty carrier?

will be heading to my dad's for the install. so experience personal will be working on it. But try to get everything ordered and ready for when i get there. thanks for any help. oh 2000 xls 4.0

The gear ratio has to be the same, front & rear. So, yes, if you have 3.73 in the rear, you have 3.73 in the front.

L/S in the rear has no bearing on the front carrier. I would guess "no", no L/S in the front. But, it's possible (factory option?).

You only have to change the rear carrier if Aussie doesn't make a locker for the L/S carrier. If you do have to change, it's a straight swap (L/S to Open). Same holds true for the front diff.

As long as you find an axle in decent shape there should be no reason not to use the carrier(s) from a "pick-n-pull" yard. Buying new is just going to be expensive.

Hope that answers your questions - Dave.

there was no front LS available for the D35. I have an aftermarket one. Just go pick up a 8.8 open carrier at the j-yard. much cheaper, and they are strong axles, so it should be in good shape.

cool. thank for the info. that answers the questions fully got to love this place :)

Hey bringin this back up. Getting everything ready for when i get home. Doin the Rearing with the pops. But he thinks the LS in the rear might have to be changed. I dont think so but here is the question :

When rear gearing from 3.73 to 4.56. Will the Stock LS have to be changed or will it work?

Why would it work / not work ? (the technical stuff if you will)

thanks

my view it should work fine.. havent read of anyone changing it

The carrier is the same for 3.73 gears and 4.56 gears. You will have to get a notched center pin to clear. If you are planning on putting the aussie in the rear, the carrier must be changed to an open carrier. The Aussie will not fit inside a carrier that was originally designed with clutch pack L\S. Powertrax make a locker for a L\S carrier but it is twice the price of an Aussie. If you want to just keep the stock L\S with clutches (no Aussie) then all you have to do is install the new gears and should be good to go. I hope this helped

allout, thanks answered my not too clear question

When i did my gears i infact did not have to notch the cross pin (4.56 gears). But incase you do need one, your Dad should beable to notch the existing one.

Try finding a used Detriot or something. I saw some going for <$200 on ebay a week or so ago.

stay away fro used carriers unless you can be sure they were treated very well. 8.8's are prone to cracking the carrier when subjected to poor maintence or hard driving (and i mean REALLY HARD driving). Also i would stay with your factory carrier and buy a No-slip from powertrax. Slightly more expensive but so much better manners on the road.

k. i'll be doing all the grunt labor on the thing. i decide to go with a powertrax but a later install on it. i'll be locking the front when i do the lift cause it will be so much easier do it then. later this year i'll get around to doing the rear. thank for the info and input guys
