I found this 8" subwoofer over at cardomain.com and was wondering if it would fit in the stock (Ford Mach Audio) subwoofer box of my 98 XLT 4-door since I blew my stock subwoofer. I was thinking on purchasing this one and installing it myself. Check out the specs:

find some specs for it and tell me the mounting depth and diameter of the magnet. I will compare these to the sub box in my closet.

Ok, since no one is replying..... I did it myself. LOL! I went to Autobacs here in Beach Blvd. and installed an aftermarket 8" subwoofer! For those who don't know, here are a couple of 8" subs that will fit the stock subwoofer box of your 98 Explorer with Ford Mach audio system:

Infinity Reference 840W

MTX Thunder T4500

I went for the Infinty even though it was $10 more than the MTX since the guys at Autobacs installed and compared them before and they know how much deeper and cleaner the bass is compared to the MTX. The Infinity has a way bigger and heavier magnet and has a higher handling and peak in watts too! Oh, make sure to remove the stock plastic honeycomb like speaker cover that's screwed on top of the stock sub. I don't know why Ford even istalled those. Those things destroy the foam edges of the subwoofer. I don't recommwnd installing it with the new subwoofer. The cost for labor, by the way, was $35. That saved me the hassle of removing all the side panels and box and needing a special tool to remove the right rear seatbelt. I did try to remove the panels once and had to stopped once I reached the right rear seatbelt since it needed a special tool to unscrew it. LOL! Anyway, hope this helps another Explorer looking to replacehis/her 8" subwoofer! :)

dang, I know I typed out a rather long reply to this a while back- I must not have hit submit:( I have pictures with measurements and everything. And that special tool for the seatbelt is just a Torx bolt:)

Are there any special tricks to getting the side panels off? The last think I want to do is bust a clip or something. Thanks for the links too. Yea my speaker is busted too.

I also would be interested in some info for getting the rear side panel off. My rear sub is blow too.

No real tricks, 2 screws under rear carpet, the rest is pushpins. Removing the shoulder strap will allow the whole panel to be removed from truck.
You need to remove the whole sub box to get driver out. Stock driver has a center bolt thru the magnet.
By the way, the box can be modified to hold a 10" but it takes some work.
And, you'll need more than the stock amp to really hear a difference in drivers, so don't blow money on a great 8" if it doesn't fit future plans.
If all you want is one that outperforms stock unit, ANY 8" sub will do.
The stock amp will handle a 4 ohm load.

There were no clips in my 96 only the pin type things. And the only other thing you need to remove is a few screws that hold the panel to the floor that are under the carpet and the hook for hanging clothes and the seatbelt.

Thanks all I will give it a shot.

Do you have a factory sub box just sitting in your closet? If so, are you interested in selling it?
