'88 2.9L V-6 Have to crank for long time to get it running on all culinders. Was told to replace IAC valve - where is it? Also what is firing order and which is #1 cyl?

The Idle Air Contol valve (IAC) is located on the pass. side of the upper intake manifold at the front of the manifold. It's main body is cylindrical in shape, and is about 3" long. Two screws hold it on.

#1 cylinder is also on the pass. side of the engine and is the front-most cylinder. The firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6 and the rotor rotation is clockwise when looking down from the top.

how long has it been since you tuned up your 2.9L? plugs, wires, cap and rotor, clean the IAC and the TB

fuel filter, etc

You may also want to check the fuel pressure, this issue can point to a weak fuel pump (fuel pumps 88 has two, its very likely your in tank boost pump is out and the truck is only running with the high pressure pump on the frame rail)
