My '91 explorer will only spin starter motor and not turn engine at all.

'91 explorer/starter won't crank engine

Check that the starter's engagement kicker (name eludes me at this late hour) is working to pop out the starter drive gear into position.
Often the bolts that hold it come loose and you can simply run them back in with lock-tite or replace them if they're missing. It is pretty easy.

sounds like a bad bendix drive to me
