I have an 03 Mountaineer I borrowed and today the starter failed to engage. I can hear a light thunk behind the dash when I turn the key all the way, but no solenoid click. Tried with shifter in neutral also. The light thunking occurs with the shifter in any of the positions, so I'm assuming an "in gear" starter lockout takes place after this relay engages.
Same symptom with a fully charged starter Hot Pack hooked up. Voltmeter shows good volts. Voltmeter doesn't move at all when lights and blower motor are turned on.
Any ideas? It's a V8 4x4, if it's the starter, are they easy to replace? Will the ODB port tell me anything? I can borrow a tester.
