hi all been a while since i have been here always been tons of help and lookin for more.
there was a post with regards to the transfer case shifting motor_electronic 4wd. last year i found the post, removed the motor and cleaned the armatuer and bingo we had 4wd instantly.
all was workin good then it quit, no more shift in and out of 4wd. it was spring and was parkin truck so i left it until summer, and thought while it is warm i will clean it up again and be ready for the snow.
did that and it worked again , parked truck and used it very little in the summer. didn't even use 4wd at all. now the snow is here and no 4wd!!!!!! ok so the ?????? is.
primary reason i think is dirty contacts, the 2 contacts that run on the side of the armatuer, is there to be a coating on them that comes off after time and leaves the residue to stop contacts or ????.
did i miss something or ??? .
thanks in advance for ne input with regards to this matter.

p.s. goin out there today to fix it again as there is a foot of snow on the ground and gotta drive truck for work tomorrow
thanks hardee

"didn't even use 4x4 at all"

There lies your problem. Should shift it into 4x4 Hi and Low at least once a month to keep things from sticking. That's probably why you need to keep cleaning to get it working.

Similar Issue

I have been similar issues with my 91 explorer. When it gets cold my 4x4 doesn't like to work. Where is a good place to get specs/diagrams so I can get down and dirty or should I leave it for the pros.

Thanks,
Newbie Tom..

there is a post on this issue or many for that matter, it is an easy thing to do considering ford wants 500 plus $ for the part. i had the post long time ago so maybe someone might post the link again. as i don't have it any more

I've done mine twice

The last time I figured out a secret. It is not just the contacts that get dirty but the grease dries out in the bearings. A light oiling doesn't always fix things. I put my motor on a bench power supply and it drew over 4A. If the motor draws too much then the module won't drive it. A good test is to try and run the motor with a brake lamp in series with the motor. I ran mine in with the gear removed so it wouldn't hit the stop. Used tranny fluid to loosen bearings up. After motor was run in, it drew less than 3/4 amp.
