My cruise worked fine till a few months ago, then it would come on sometimes and sometimes not. It started after I changed the air filter. So far I have changed the module that is above the glove box the green one,I checked all the fuses with my ohm meter, all ok. I took the horn cover off and checked the ON switch,it makes contact with the plug. Brake lights work ok. There is a button above the brake pedal that is activated when the pedal is up,what is this? It seems to be at the end of a vacuum hose from the engine compartment and It's adjustable for how it is activated by a plastic panel. Is this what turns off the cruise when the brakes are applied?I've owned this car since new and now I'm almost 70 and It's hard to get under the dash to see what made to be replaced. Any help will surely be very appreciated.

I don't know if this will help, but looking at my Ford wiring diagram for the '92 Explorer, wire #511 (light green, 18 gauge) comes from the 'stoplamp' switch and goes (among other places) to the plug that connects to the 'speed control amplifier'. From the drawing, there is a connection to the vacuum system that goes to the servo motor via a vacuum modulating valve. Have you checked all of the related vacuum hoses? The reason I suspect the vacuum system is that you mentioned that for a while it would sometimes come on and sometimes not, and perhaps there is a vacuum leak. There are electrical and other diagrams referenced on this site, you might want to locate and download them.

The adjustable "switch" with the vacuum line on the brake pedal goes directly to the cruise control servo, if it's not making contact with the pedal, cruise won't work. You can pull it down so that it's making contact if it has moved. Hope that fixes your problem!
