I went in today to get a tension pulley for my 93, when she brought it up it was small and had grooves like the alternator pulley, when i explained to him mine was smooth he then decided to check "something" in his computer and found that the pulley i needed was for a 92 ex. so just wondering.. is it a 92 cause it might have been closer to the front of the line when they were getting made or is there a chance someones dropped in a 92 motor before i bought it

I just checked myself on Autozone's website, it looks like that may be the case. grooved on 93, smooth on 92. I did not know of that difference.

My 93 is the same smooth pulley. Autozone told it was a 92?

I should check my build date. Maybe it was early in the production year.

This is whats listed on Advanced Auto as the 93 pulley i needed

The "old" tensioner design used up until late '92 (even on then-1993 model year models produced in late '92) was a "pull" type (hence the pulley with the grooves) that tensioned the belt from the inside, and pulled it outwards. The design was later the subject of a recall by Ford. A few aftermarket companies still make this and parts places sell it.

The "new" tensioner design used on 93-up, and the recall replacement, uses the smooth pulley and the tensioner "pushes" the belt from the outside. This is a stronger, more reliable model.

You can of course use the grooved type if your Explorer never received the recall service, and the original pulley lasted that long, but the other style is a nice improvement if you can get it instead.

i had smooth and do now, just sucks their computer said in stock.. the groove one even though i told him smooth and it wasnt right one.. but fixed now.. just didnt understand how the 92 motor in a 93 worked out.. im sure they fit up, but as far as i knew it was original motor..

It probably is the original motor, just with the newer tensioner design from the recall.

i know there was other recalls this explorer didnt get, but fixed my self, rear door shocks at the weld plate.. busted on me.. and its a recall and they wanted to take 2 weeks to fix it.. nope.. lol welded it up at a friends house

My build date was 8/1993. And I have the smooth one. Orignal motor in it,

might be like Anime said, it could have had the recall already done on it to convert it to smooth one.

im not complaining or any thing i was just trying to figure it out, because i was like "oh crap, if this isnt a 93 motor and i go to order 93 parts they might not fit." but never even thought about checking the old recalls. thanks guys.
