Hello all,

This is my first post here, I didn't realize there was this huge of an Explorer community. This is great. I hope someone here can help me. I've had my 1992 Ford Explorer Sport with 5 speed Manual tranny since about Oct of 1996. Its the best vehicle I've owned and I never want to get rid of it.

So far im tapping 143,000 miles on it and the transmission is really doing strange things. So far I have a new clutch and a new master cylinder in it both have around 5000 miles put on them since they've been installed. But the tranny has been hard to shift into first gear from a stop. Say im sitting at a light I pop it into neutral and let the clutch out and I go to put it back into first, I have a very hard to doing so. So I have to slide it all the way over to 5th and back, sometimes that will release what ever is preventing it from going into first. But not always, I end up forcing it and that works. I know it shouldn't be this hard.

Now recently its been inching forward when I stop a red light, with the clutch in and in first gear it will slowly creep foward until I seem to "pop" it out of first gear or rev the gas a little.

Is this just signs of the tranny needing to be replaced or needing to be rebuild? Or is there something else wrong with the clutch?

I hope someone can help. Thanks in advance.

Mine did the same thing when I had the clutch replaced. The problem was the shop reserfaced the flywheel and removed too much material. After ALOT of troubleshooting, I finally ended up replacing the flywheel to fix the problem.

Tranny trouble

Hi, Swiss Miss,

I have a 92 with the 5 speed and 150k miles. I had the same trouble shifting into first gear. This problem is most likely caused by worn synchros. Mine was OK when cold, but very hard to move the shifter into 1st after warmup.

Also, the creeping may be due to a bad slave cylinder inside the trans. The slave cylinder is operated hydraulically and is what actually disengages the clutch.

I had my trans overhauled, which included new slave cylinder, synchros, bearings, seals, clutch, shift fork, and flywheel resurfacing. It cost me about $1850.00. I felt it was worth it because now it behaves like new and I want to keep the X for a long time.

Thanks for all that answered my question. You have been a big help to point me in the right direction. This message board is great.

I may have found a good website for Rebuilt Transmissions. For a ton of cars. Including the X. I found their link on eBay.

Pheonix HardParts

They sell the A4LD for $650.00 (+250 Core Charge)

Thanks all,
Chris H.
