I have a 92 xlt auto 2 wheel drive.
My o/d went out (slipping)then the only way to drive was to shift it like a manuel
as in 1, 2, 3.
Mr Transmission wants $1,600 to fix it .Is this a little high or am I getting the royal
shaft??
Thanks for any help

wml5599,
I would llike to respectfully disagree with Daemon. I have a '93xlt with the same O/D tranny - a4ld. Here is the problem - well, more than likely Dead Link Removed. The O/D band in your transmission was found to be to weak for the Explorer. The band came loose - that's why you lost O/D. The cause of the band loosening is the band struts. The ones in your transmission are probably shaped like an "I" and the new replacements are shaped like a "Y". Make sure your tranny shop rebuilds yours to CURRENT specs - not just replace what's in there. I just had mine done in March. It cost $2100 with a shift kit installed and having it beefed up a bit to handle more power and torque in the future. $1600 doesn't sound that bad - does it? Dead Link Removed

For a full rebuild, $1600 is not that bad. It may depend on where you live but that is even low compared to some of the estimates I have heard. Good luck!

Oftentimes it is cheaper in the long run to buy a used or already rebuilt tranny than have yours rebuilt. ESPECIALLY by shops with "Transmission" in their name. Mr. Transmission, AAMCO, all these places try to console you by saying you wont need to replace your tranny. They usually have the same ethical standard as Midas or Mineke, and you know better to stay away from those places, don't you? Rebuilding is their bread & butter.

My tranny in my old Camaro (stop laughing) was shot, and all these "Specialty" shops wanted $1600 - $2400 to rebuild it. My regular mechanic almost bit my head off. $600 bucks later, I had a different rebuilt installed. Still running, after 4 years and tons of abuse by subsequent owners!

Call boneyards. Consult a professional mechanic. Check the "For Sale" section of this site for rollovers that people are parting out. You might end up as pleasantly surprised as I was.

I just got my 91 4x4 back from AAMCO yesterday. $1684 for a complete rebuild. So if that's what your getting they're in the ballpark. I got a 1yr unlimited warranty also.
