93 302 Swap Info

I had a flash thought about would a Gen II 1995-2001 Explorer AC box fit and work for the 5.0. Some Gen 2s came with 5.0s
I'll @410Fortune Jamie to see if he thinks it might work.

Completely different firewall
It can be done basically cut your firewall out and convert to gen ii firewall and dash (chop cut weld)

I prefer my 88 dash… way more room in the interior and classic looks

Otherwise this is the way
Nice work! You are getting there!!!

Okay. It's kind of done. I didn't realize I needed a plate in between the flywheel the trans backer plate? So we are gonna have to pull the motor yet again. But the trans fitment went well wasn't too hard with a trans jack. And yes the cross member did line up with the stock holes so no drilling. I used this bolt 7/16? Basically a trans housing bolt but cut the head off and made a slot for a screw driver to ease the line up process. I saw it on the tiktoks. When it's fully assembled and I have the T case on I'll repost. Maybe a couple weeks! Also dimpled the oil pan on the spot identified on the pics and freed up some room. Looks good.

When I put the transmission in my sport trax we forgot the scatter shield
You do it 100 times I guess it happens to the best of us!! Hahaha

Sob
So instead of dropping the trans or pulling the engine again… I just cut it, loosened trans pulled it back an inch and stuck it in there

Forgot to mention. The fiberglass was maybe a bit too big for the box. Got it mostly together. But had some issues. Got it as well as I could and RTVed it a bunch to keep the seal. Hopefully that works.

Can go to junk yard get another heater box cover and make another… swap them out

I'm not much of a resourceful person unfortunately. I ordered from jegs as I won't touch it for a couple weeks anyway. Quick one for you. Can you use the 4.0 Tcase electric switch motor on the 4406 borg Warner transfer case? It appears to bolt up but the sensor looks different. I am hoping to use my stock 4x4 dash buttons. I am assuming I can just get a different sensor. And the brown wire is a ground? I had to cut it.

Yes same shift motor and shift pattern

can use it
I convert rangers to use the touch button 4wd 4406 and we get to keep the ranger t case shift motor

You will have to feed the 4wd control module a neutral signal or (clutch pedal 3 position switch) so it will shift into low range with the clutch pressed in

This is a bit confusing. The car is already a manual. The sensor it currently has is 2 wires. The ones I'm seeing online are 3? If I'm correct. Do you happen to have an example handy? Thanks again!

Since you are already a manual transmission and electronic shift 4wd your trucks 4wd control module should already have the neutral safety in place for the low range shift

What sensor only has two wires?
Please explain
Sorry if I confused you it is easy to do over the internet!

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong part? But I'll need the more modern sensor. Current sensor is two wires where the 4406 will require 3. Black/Green instead of red blue green!

That is not the correct part

That is a speed sensor for a control trac awd version of the 4406

The 4406 comes in 3 variations
1. Manual shift
This t case has a single sensor which is one wire for high range light and one wire for low range light

2. Electronic shift
Which is like your ranger case, has a shift motor. Same shift motor as your current truck. Dash lights controlled by existing shift motor and buttons

3. Control Trac electronic shift
This case has a shift motor and two additional speed sensors
We don’t normally use the control Trac case (expeditions)

The neutral shift safety is done at your
Clutch pedal
The clutch pedal switch has 3 functions
1. Start circuit, starter won’t run unless clutch depressed
2. Cruise control shut off when clutch depressed (so engine does not over rev)
3. Low range shift, electric shift t case won’t shift into low without clutch pressed in

You must be talking about this speed sensor in your stock 93 transfer case?

The 4406 e shift doesn’t have one of these
Might make it harder to use your phone push buttons and 4wd control module to shift a 4406

The way around this would be to wire in a later model 4wd control module dash switch and shift motor
The 02+ ranger, Explorer use a stand alone 4wd control module we call the “Motorola box” here on this forum. It can be wired into any vehicle that wants to use a e shift t case like the 4406 or 1354

So if I understand. I don't necessarily need that speed sensor? If I wanted it I would have to use a standalone selecter module for the 4x4? Do you just plug that hole where the sensor goes with some rubber or plastic? Thanks for the explanation.

The 4406 t case does not have that sensor

so Your current push buttons and controller may not be happy and may or may not shift the transfer case

When I convert rangers to use the 4406 e shift t case and the customer wants push buttons I can wire in the Motorola box I mentioned before

The 92 explorer I am building right now, also getting a v8 5 speed and 4406 t case … but we are using a manual shift t case so it’s a non issue

No major updates. Spent a couple hours removing the headlights. The bottom bolts on both sides got stuck and had to be broken/ cut. Weird. I also had trouble getting to them in the first place / understanding the clip system to fully remove the turn signal. I'll examine it now that it's apart. Looking at this more. I think I'll end up swapping the whole core support.
